1995 Drive Shaft Length

Hello all,
After 2 years of owning my 1995 f150 XLT, the transmission finally kicked the dust. A neighbor of mine has a spare 5 speed he was willing to give me. So instead of rebuilding the stock 4r70w automatic, I am going to be swapping in the 5 speed and converting the truck to a manual. Does anyone know what the new front and rear drive shaft lengths are going to be once I put in the 5spd with transfer case? Are there any other body style combinations that have drive shafts that will fit? Thank you for any help.

My trucks specs:

1995 F-150 XLT 4x4
Engine: 5.0 302
Stock Transmission: 4r70w
Extend Cab with Short box

Do you have any identification info for the manual? If it’s not a stock Ford trans for this era, you’ll have to get it installed and then take measurements to have the driveshafts made. Otherwise you can possibly go to sites like rockauto.com and look up your truck with the manual transmission.

You’ll likely need a different starter too.

Also, when changing from an auto to a manual - I don’t know for sure, but I think there’s going to be some wiring harness changes and possibly a PCM swap (you may be able to just change the pin locations at the PCM).

Conanski, subford, and rla2005 are a few members that can shed more light on that.

The transmission is a M5OD-R2 coming out of another 1995 f150 with a 351. I already have a replacement ECM, wiring harness, starter, and bell housing spacer plate to fully integrate the new transmission. I didn't want to install it until I had all the parts ready to go, hence the drive shaft question. Sadly the donor truck the transmission came out of is no longer around so I can't get the drive shafts from it.

How did you determine that the transmission is dead?

As previously mentioned, knowing what manual transmission is important. If the bellhousing is part of the case then it can only go behind certain engines.

The 4R70W currently in the truck does not have first gear, it takes forever to switch gear while driving, the overdrive light is constantly blinking when driving, and I need to rev the engine to over 1,500 RPM in order to get it into gear after shifting from park. I've tried pulling codes but the only thing im getting is an error for the EGR valve. The new manual is a M5OD-R2 coming from a 1995 with a 351. Plus i'm getting the new transmission for free so I figured i'd use it

That still sounds like it is most likely an electrical issue and not mechanical. Your friend had swapped out a 300/302 for the 351? That isn’t the way it would have come from the factory.

The truck was resto-modded, he swapped the 351W after the original 302 quit. He rebuilt the transmission completely before giving it to me, so it's practically new.

If there is an electrical issue with the transmission, I don't know what it would be. I've check all the connections and wires running to it and everything seems to be in OK condition. Even if I got the transmission working in good condition, i'd still like to swap it out for the manual, I've already got most of the parts I need and only need the drive shafts.

What ECM are you using? I have essentially the exact same truck as you and was going to swap in a 5 speed, the ZF5. Finding a stock ECM that will work with your MAF setup proved to be very difficult. You could use one out of a 5 speed Mustang, however.

I had originally pulled an ECM out of the same year truck with a 5 Speed, but like you said, I later found out it wont work with my MAF setup. I was told that a T4M0 ECM from a 1995 mustang GT would work as long as I either bypass the second O2 sensor pins on the ECM or install another one. If this is wrong or if there is more than just the O2 sensor, please tell me. I can't find any other threads that have a problem like this.

That’s correct, a T4M0 for a Mustang will work. Im not positive for an M5 but the ZF5 transmission wiring harness has an O2 plug on the drivers side. So you could install a 2nd O2 sensor for the drivers side and also use the stock sensor on the passenger side. The wiring is all there so it makes that easy. Or like you said you could jumper it. I think the only issue you’ll have is the T4M0 doesn’t have a pin for the 4x4 light.

I had the correct front and rear driveshaft lengths for this swap but I’m having trouble locating it at the moment.

One more question, would I need to replace the engine's wiring harness when I go install the T4M0 ECM? Or can I just install it as is with the factory F150 harness. I already know I need to replace the transmission's wiring harness.

Yeah you keep the existing engine wiring harness the truck has when using the T4M0 computer. It's the only stock ECM that'll run your setup for MAF and 5 speed.

Here's a link I saved where the OP uses a T4M0 in his MAF Bronco. https://www.fullsizebronco.com/threa...bronco.118445/
