Drive shaft help

I have a issue. I broke my drive shaft in the forward joint. I have tried two other drive shafts and they where to short. I checked three diferent places and the transmission that was suppose to be on my truck was a 4R70W. So I ordered a used drive shaft and it was to short by almost 6 inches. I aquired another drive shaft and same problem. I have a 1998 4x4 standard transmission. I measured the shaft lengths without the joint(transfer case side) and the one off the truck was 38 1/4" and the ones that were suppose to fit are 34 1/4" to the U-joint housing. My question is since all these so call pros don't know, What drive shaft should I order? Need my vehicle for work as I am in the military. Only thing I have to drive. Thanks in advance for any responses

So your truck was converted from an automatic to a manual at some point? Or is it just a rare manual trans truck from the factory?

The auto trans is longer requiring a shorter driveshaft. If you tell the parts guys it is a manual, you should be able to source the correct one, though they are much less common than the auto trans version.

I would skip all that and find a local driveline shop. They can repair your bad driveshaft or even build a new one quite easily and inexpensively. They probably do most of their work on large trucks but generally will do our little trucks too.

There are no junk yards here or I would have been there already. SO not really an option. It was a police vehicle at one point but not a manual so to the drive line shop I go thanks.

A drive shaft from a manual trans. F150 will probably fit. You will have to check with a dealership parts department that deals with the police vehicles. You could also contact the maint. garage of the agency that originally had the truck for more info on it. They may even have a spare shaft for it in stock.
