Does anyone know where I'd look to find the part number off my distributor? I replaced my valley pan and cleaned up a lot of oil off the motor. I found this on the distributor shaft
when I looked up the number, I kept seeing things for 289's and 302's, I've got a 292. Anyone know where the actual part number is located, if there is one?
That probably is the part number. C7 would make it from 1967 so it makes sense it was for a small block. I didn't know they would work in a Y block.
This is the casting number for the housing only, it's not the distributor ID number or a part number. There were no part numbers marked on parts after 1956.
Distributor ID number is stamped on the side of the housing just below the cap, may be similar to this: C7OF-12127-A
This distributor is probably one of the Cardone rebuilds. We assumed that with a lack of good rebuildable Y block cores they started using the 289/302 type distributors and relocating the drive gear and not that accurately and it's a critical dimension. The 289/302 lower body part is triangular shape like yours, Y blocks were round. The other problem was the shaft length, the 289 shaft barely engages the oil pump drive. Cardone was notified about this and now you don't see them on places like Ebay were there use to be a flood of them and I think they were pulled from most auto parts stores. There was a huge discussion about this on the Yblockforever form last year.

EXCELLENT POST - INFO!
The actual DIST ID is located on the DIST BOWL -
If OEM unmolested, there will be an ID NO PREFIX before 12127 and a PN SUFFIX after 12127 that will positively ID the original application. The example above has been modified. Most re-builders remove this info as the DIST is calibrated for more than the original application. Also, with the correct ID, you can refer to the correct year WSM (shop manual) and find the curving specs for the particular DIST.
