I posted this in the Inline forum but without any reply. I bought a truck 78 300-6 4x4 that had a goodie box full of misc parts. In the box was a water pump motor mounts, both for a 300, a few other things and a Motorcraft distributor #12127. Anyone know what this fits and alittle more info on it? The dist looks like a 300 distributor but I dunno.
12127 is the basic Ford part number for ANY distributor. The prefix and suffix indicate application/calibration. If I remember correctly, as an example, a (part number) COAZ-12127-L is for a any (FE)427 and was originally applied to the 1960 360hp 352. The xxxx-12127-xx on the distributor is a calibration number and not a part number. A parts book would possibly list a crossover to the replacement part number which would indicate the engine and year.
Understood: u-n-d-e-r-s-t-o-o-d. Thought I'd spell it out. Just kidding you, Mil1ion. I worked as a Ford parts man from 1969 to 1976 so I had a fairly good understanding of the system but I can also appreciate how confusing it can be to the uninformed. The General Motors parts numbering "system" (I'm told) is impossible to figure out compared to Ford's, which is at least logical. I still have some parts books and would/could scan and post copies but their doesn't seem to be a way to do it on this site-i.e. no "document" thread or posting area.
I just try to get across to people to post ALL the information in the initial post instead of taking numerous posts to get to the guts of the situation.
I have an extensive library of FORD original literature myself.
There is a even a couple of web sites that explain Fords numbering system.
