I was changing the oil today and looked under the truck towards the trans. Saw some drops on the pan, and I was going to change the gasket, but I wanted to verify here what I actually have. Door tag says C5, and I am not as familiar with Ford transmissions as I am with GM by just eyeballing them. Its practically a square, no bumps along the bottom, and the fill tube enters the side of the pan on the passenger side. Only trans I knew that had the fill into the pan is a mid 60's FMX transmission. Does this sound like a C5?

"Door" tag (Certification Label) does not ID the trans, only has a code for it. Post what the code is.
Sounds like a C5 to me. But the quickest easiest way to know for sure(never know if it's been swapped) is to look at the shape of the pan and number of bolts and compare that to the picture I posted.

The C5 was never used in the full-size trucks. and was limited to 4cyl and V6 applications.
So the link that has a screen shot of the factory book is wrong that 82 on up had the C5?
His was 11/83 truck by the posted sticker.
BTW that same screen shot has the C4 (code J) used in 80 / 82 trucks.
I think there have been others on here that also said they had a C5 in their truck.

My error it was used in the trucks in just 2 applications, with the 3.8L V6 and the super light GVW 300 I6 84-86 trans tag PEA-CU. The C4 was used in the trucks but it is a much stronger trans than the C5, the C5 was never put behind a V8 in any application whereas the C4 was and had been for decades. The C5 had a much lower torque capacity due to the lock-up torque converter and revised valve body. The C5 is a light-duty RWD trans that was used primarily in the Fox bodies Ranger/Bronco II and the Aerostar it was never installed in ANY of the Panthers and should have never been put in the trucks either And even in those applications, it was not noted for longevity with converter failure being quite common, the aftermarket does not even service the C5 converter due to it's propensity to grenade. Contrary to popular belief the C5 is not just a C4 with a lock-up torque converter while it shares some of C4's internals and many parts will interchange many will not the C5 has several unique internal parts and the valve body internally is completely different.
