Question Building something to scale

I was wondering what is the formula for determining the size of something when building it to scale. For instance, I want to build a 1:25 scale model of what I want my shop to look like for when I go to build it. I plan on drawing up the blueprints and then making a small model of it and see what will work. Anybody have any info.? I'm sure it's simple, I'm just too tired to think of anything. I'm not sure of yet as to the size of the actual building either. I think I'll stake off the property tomorrow and get some measurements. Thanks for the help.

well its easy, for every 1 inch you could make it to where its 25 inches, or for evry foot its equal to 25 foot...i go with the latter, since it will be rather large i am sure

It really is pretty simple. What you have going is , like with your example 1:25, 1 ft = 25ft. So if your shop was, say 75 feet long (mmm...big garage ) then your model would be 3 ft long. 1:12 is a nice scale to work in because you end up with 1 in = 1 ft and no real math is reqired

You can also draw it up to where 1/4" is 1 foot, then you can get a scale and determine measurements that are not on the initial sketch.

For example: How far is it from the corner to where I want my thingamajig? Just take your scale (which should be in increments of 1/16") lay it down on your sketch and you'll have it. This way 1/16" will be 3", 1/8" will be 6" and so forth.

on edit: You can get some of your wife's freezer paper and draw you sketch on that. The waxy film will help preserve your delicate and mind-boggling work!!!

It would be easier to do it 1:24 then it would be an even 2 feet to the inch. Would make the math easier. My .02

On Edit: I didn't read OldBlue's whole post. Kinda the same thing except 1:12 can get pretty big if you have a 40 or 50' shop that's a 4' model.

normally a 1:25 scale would be 1" = 25' ... if you are going to draw out your garage on a 8.5x11 piece of paper you could use a 1:4 scale which would be 1/4" = 1' or 1"=4' as long as the garage is about 30'x40' or under that scale will fit nicely on the paper

Got a 3D home architect program. After you design everything (it calculates measurements too) you can print it out, paste it to artboard and build your model that way. Plus it has tons of templates, furniture, landscaping, etc to play with.

Thanks for the info guys. 2Bowers, what's the name of that program, I might go pick it up. I'm building this shop in the next couple of years to house my buisiness. Classic Ford car and truck restoration shop. Everything is done in-house, so the shop building will be pretty big. Looking for land now to build house and shop on. Looking for at least 30 acres of relatively flat land. Don't want the shop right next to the house with the paint booth and all. I'll post pics of the model when I'm finished in the Garage Forum. I want to do it in the 1:24 scale so I can build some model car and trucks and put in there also, make it look pretty cool. I'll probably start it next week. We'll see what happens. Thanks guys.

Here is a link to download a program that lets you print all sorts of different "graph" papers on your computer. The scales can be selected to fit your project. Just download and install and your ready to go!

The one I have is called Super Home Suite by Punch software. It was about $50 when I bought it in Jan., have seen it cheaper since, but there are quite a few good ones besides that will serve your purpose if you decide to go that route.
