Hanging shelves

I am hanging a 7 foot long shelf that is 12 inches deep and 3/4 inches thick. I am using L brackets and 3 inche screws into the studs. The studs on the house are in a bad place for hanging the shelf, and I was wondering if there was a way they could be hung without anchoring into the studs. This is going in a fraternity house and there is going to a be a stereo and some other miscellaneous things on the shelf, the sheetrock is 1/2 inch. Thanks for the help.

If it's MY fraternity, I'll help, if not, I'll give you the wrong directions

Sheet rock can only hold so much weight...
With a seven foot long shelf, I'm sure you can at least get SOME in the studs - that would really help...

you might go to your local lowe's or home depot and look at the selection of hollow wall anchors, etc... there should be someone there that can give you some insight into how to do it as well...

now if it was my wife's wall - she'd want in centered to the 1/32 inch and all the mounts EXACTLY balanced....
but hey, this is a Frat house !!! make it work !!!

How heavy is the stereo? It would probably be a good idea to have at least two or three L bracket points attached to the studs. Find your studs and screw in the L brackets, (don't forget to level). Then, with the shelf on temp., slide the brackets w/o support up under the shelf where you want them and mark the sheetrock where the holes will go. You can get plastic anchors at the hardware store that screw into the sheetrock. The new type look somewhat like an auger, so you don't need to drill.

what you can do is run a 2x4 stringer across the studs horizontally. screwing that 2x4 into the studs. put one right at the bottom of the shelf and then another one at the bottom of the brackets. then you can place the brackets where ever want to. use some good heavy duty brackets with the cross bracing on them. don't use them cheap stamped brackets. don't rely on drywall to hold anything but pictures. i would over kill it so much cause you know someone is gona try to dance on it sooner or later. how far off hte floor is this shelf going to be?? if it's low enough like counter or dj table height you can make it like a cabinet also with the back top stringer and some vertical supports at the edge unless you did want it totally free standing

Like Howdy says there are a number of different anchors that work very well in either plaster or drywall. The premise of each is that they expand on the back side holding your bracket tight to the wall on the front side. Again, hit as many of the studs as you possibly can.

What about using a free standing shelf and then "anchor" it to the wall to keep it stable. You could still build the shelf yourself, and it will probably support more weight since it isn't hanging on the wall. Also, less holes to fill when you move out. If you build it free standing, put a couple of horizontal structural "slats" accross the back so you can screw through them into the wall to secure the shelf. The difference will be the floor will be taking the weight instead of the wall.
