I was wondering what you all thought about people just "dropping by" from time to time. Is it very polite to do so? What is the "boundary" of 'every now and then' and 'too often'?
I ask this 'cause I'm looking to go see a friend from high school back at the hometown, but I haven't seen him in a year or so. Don't know if it is more polite to just drop in or throw a phone call his way.
If this sounds dumb, I apoligize. My friends are all scattered across the state and the only person that drops by here is the pizza delivery boy (and I'm usually expecting him).
I think it's always nice to have a bit of warning.
My mom, bro and sis called from the highway, on the way over and 5 minutes away once, and that was JUST enough time to clean the place up to be presentable for my mom.
My buddy who lives 3 hours away has to give warning in case I'm not home. Another buddy who lives 3 minutes away calls so he doesn't burn gas if I'm not home.
My future inlaws MUST give warning. No exceptions. Hers, however, may come and go as they please. Ha ha.
I treat others the way I want to be treated, I call ahead rather than showing up. I don't mind people coming over I just like to know in the event something needs to be cleaned up i.e., me.
I enjoy it when somebody shows up unannounced, so long as it's somebody that I haven't seen for some time. When it's somebody who just lives down the road and you see them all the time, or it's somebody you work with, or that annoying family member that we all have, it just goes too far. When I come back to town after a long departure, I usually just drop by for a suprise. After I've been in the area for a while, I usually call for an invitation. Sometime surprises are nice.
...My "friends" can drop by anytime or even call collect and I can do the same with them...
However...
I have a very short list of people I call "friends"...all else are acquaintances...
I feel the title of friend is overused more than hero...
I think it really depends on who the person is. I know that my apartment is like an open door policy my roommate and I get confused when people even bother knocking. But thats college. I think that I would not mind people coming by randomly as long as I didn't already have something going on. But I guess thats the point of a phone call.
I like people to call first.
My fiancee or close friends can just stop by, but most of the clal first.
If I havent seen them in a while I'll drop by, or dont care if they just drop by.
I don't go to anyones house here locoally without calling first. I dont like to be a pest
Wuuullllll I'm gettin ready for a trip across the states. From Portland Or. to some obscure place in Pennsylvania. Does this mean I have to call each of you guys before I drop by?
Gawd, the Cell phone bill????
I think it all depends on the situation. Most of the time I will call, and I also like to be called when someone stops over. I do have friends who don't mind at all and usually stop by un-announced.
I have been caught at bad times when people stop over... sometimes busy, sometimes not quite dressed yet, place a mess, etc. Thats why I usually always call, unless I know someone will be around and free to have someone drop by (they are working on their vehicle, etc). I'll go along with the consesus that it's better to call or give warning.
Wow I like this calling feature. Sometimes people don't even knock when they come into my room, I have to lock my door when I go across the hall to take a shower. Dorm life. Yippee.
