Took my 2015 F350 (41K on the clock) in for my lifetime oil change at the local Ford dealer and they informed me my front brakes pads needed replacing...getting thin.. So this weekend I removed the calipers to replace the pads and found the pads were thin but disintegrating.. I've always replaced my brakes pads on all my vehicles still I was 16 (now 76) and never saw such a mess. see pic below.. Any ideas what causes this ? Both right and left looked about the same.. Going to check the rear today. Surprisingly, the brakes were working fine.. no problems.
I don't think those were semi-metallic, I think they're 100% Fe
You might seriously consider contacting the NTSB (or DOT?). NOT for litigious reasons or personal gain but that looks horrendous given the mileage and age....it feels like someone was cutting corners
What did the caliper brackets look like,? I've never seen pads like that.
The Caliper brackets had the normal light rust but OK.. The contact surfaces cleaned up easy. I think you guys are right.. it was the salt. Our local Post Office puts tons of salt on their parking lot in front of our small Post Office in the winter. We pick up of daily mail there. It probably started a couple of years ago.. I am not going to park right in front of the Office anymore !! And wash off the wheels and brakes when I get home.. I checked the back pads yesterday. They look OK just looking at them thru the calipers.. Thanks for your comments.
I had all the braking bits replaced 2.5 years ago (about 35,000 km / 22,000 mi. ago). A few weeks ago, I took my truck in to do a brake service (inspect & lube etc.) as one of my rear brakes started seizing and then releasing after a while. I ended up replacing both, low mileage rear calipers under NAPA's lifetime warranty. However, what blew me away was the condition of the front pads ... again with low miles. The edges all looked like Clintbonnie's above but the decay had not yet progressed towards the center of my pads yet. I was shocked and have never seen brake pads that looked like that ... EVER! I hate to say this but I'm glad somebody else had the same condition pads or else I wouldn't have believed it.
