All,
It's been a while since my last post, thankfully no problems. But now, here we go...I did a 4-wheel brake job on my 97 expedition in December. The front brakes have squeeled with light braking ever since. It goes away with heavy braking. There are only like 5-6k on these brakes. Short of changing the pads, is there anything else I can do? By the way, I have gone back in and sprayed the back surface with that silicon "stop squeel" spray...no change. Has anyone had good results from a particular pad? I bought some middle of the road pads from NAPA..perhaps they would credit me for an upgrade? Anyone have experience with that? Thanks.
Squeaks are generally caused by vibrations. These vibrations will cause the pads to wear in an irregular pattern, hence you're probably right about needing new pads. I had some that wore poorly and they were replaced under the "lifetime" warranty offered by the part store. When you replace them again, make sure your rotors are turned or replaced because you need two true surfaces.
I replaced the front pads on my Ford Windstar and they immediately squeaked. After asking around, I discovered I probably should have bought a better pad (I bought the cheapest that AutoZone had). I redid the brakes with better pads and the squeak went away. Lesson learned.
I just the brakes on my 99 expy and I used Hawk SuperDuty brake pads ($70 from tirerack.com). No squeaks.
I'm not saying cheap pads are always the cause of squeaks, just in my case that seems to be true.
