NP273F Rebuild
I was working on a 2010 Ram 3500 with a cummins and I found that the transfer case was bone dry. I filled it up drove it a little bit and found the bright red ATF had turned into grey goo when I drained it. I told the owner, they already knew the transfer case was making noises and not working like it should. I pulled it out and found that the case was cracked, sure explains the leak.
I tried my best to find a NVG273 in a scrapyard in the state to no avail. Hell, even all the cheap ones on ebay had the wrong spline count on the input shaft. I almost gave up, but then it hit me like a 2x4 sent from the heavens. I had 3 NP273s from 99-03 F350's just laying around waiting to get used. I took some measurements, researched the internal components, and decided to crack both of them open. The bearings, seals, oil pump, gears, and chains were all the same. I think the only difference was the engagement mechanism for the 4x4 lock.
I swapped out a lot of the parts. I think, mind you I don't have all the technical terms in my vocabulary, I just swapped out the planetary, output shaft, the output shaft extension, and the studs on the front that mate up to the transmission.
I've never rebuilt a transfer case until this. It didn't leak, and it worked. I'm surprised as hell. I also swapped out the ID tag on the rear housing, that'll throw the next guy into a tailspin of confusion.
