So long as a battery meets the engine CCA requirement, it's good to go, a deep cycle battery would be OK. The really old school marine lead-acid batteries might be too large to fit, physically, in the tray was usually the problem. Now the reverse is never true, an automotive start battery used in a deep cycle application will get smoked right away.

It depends on how you use it. If it starts the boat then stays running long enough to recharge it's fine, but If you like to anchor all day with the lights and radio going then you'd want the deep cycle.

I've always run a deep cycle as my second battery on my off road trucks and wired them with a manual boat switch. When I get to a spot I intend to stay for awhile I'll switch the truck battery off and run on the deep cycle. Before I restart I'll swap back to the truck battery, then run both after it's running again.

Well that's exactly what I meant, if that's not clear somehow.

An automotive start battery used in a deep cycle application will be ruined - permanently - perhaps as quickly as in a half dozen cycles. They don't like deep discharges, where marine batteries are designed for this purpose. Very expensive mistake!

On the cables someone said if old just replace them ..... how true!
Corrosion buildup is on the inside were you cant see it and get the largest cable you can.
Some of the parts stores have 2 different gauge size on the rack go big or go home as they say.

As part of my 81 F100 (with a 300 six) rebuild was to replace the battery cables.
Till I got it on the road I would only place the NEG cable on the battery to start it to move around and it started every time with no issues.

My $0.02

About the

Copper lugs, assorted, were $20 on Amazon. About $5 each on the battery terminals. not shown.

Yep. Solenoid to starter. Original 6ga.
cables, I just built new ones for pennies on the dollar. I got a length of 4 gauge welding cable, welding cable cause it has more strands, is super flexible, and I assume better insulation as far as heat goes. 4 ga because that is bigger than stock, and 2 gauge gets expensive quick. also, I'm not running any huge loads.
Anyways, 4ga. cable solder on type battery terminal ends and a handful of copper lug terminals and I built all 3 main cables in an hour. I also picked up a small roll of braided copper to build grounds for EVERYTHING. My built 352 spins over like nobody's business and fires right up with that hot spark.

Just FWIW, I wouldn't worry about a stretched timing chain on a 240/300 Ford six...ever.
