Starter malfunction question

Hi everyone

So, I tried to start my 1948 Ford F1 pickup truck yesterday and it didn’t fire up on the first starter push, I immediately pushed the starter before the fly wheel and starter stopped moving on the next start attempt accidentally.

When I hit the button immediately a loud noise occurred and the starter does not engage with the fly wheel now, but just makes a grinding noise. Like it’s not in full contact with the flywheel but partially touching just enough to kiss the gears.

Push started it by myself and park on hills now to keep driving my favorite truck!

Can anyone help me use understand what happened? Did something come loose and needs readjusting?

It’s going to the shop next week as soon as they open Monday, but I’d like to take in a little on the visual level at this point. The shop a few blocks away helped me with the starter last time when some parts fell off and the starter. They were able to use a magnetic tool and recapture the parts that fell off and rebuild it. The new starter I ordered was only for a V8 and I have the Flathead 6. They do NOT interchange in contrary to many things I have read on the internet

I’d like to order a rebuild kit, but want to have someone do the rebuild due to building a shed now which takes up all my time

thanks for any input and ask anything if I’m not clear in what I said above or you need more info

Sounds like you may have busted the starter Bendix gear.

I would remove the starter - it is one electrical connection and 2 bolts. Then you can inspect the Bendix drive. Replacing the Bendix drive can be done with basic tools should you find the need. Also, what makes you think the 6 and the 8 cylinders use different starters? As far as I am aware, they are the same and even cross with Ford tractors, Model A and T and many more. The Bendix Drive may have different tooth count based upon application.

ok thanks

When I ordered the starter for a 1948 and brought it to the shop to be installed, they said it won’t fit. Then I called the distributor and they said oh yeah, we only sell one for the V8

Thats all I know

the same happened to me. I removed the starter and took it to the repair shop.. The gear at the end of the starter had shattered. They put a new nose piece on and all was good.. About $ 70.00 as I recal

When you get the two mounting bolts loose, do not take them out. They go all the way thru the starter. Loosen the bolts, holding the starter housing together, navigate it around the flywheel and out. It's handy to have a couple of 5/16" nuts to put on the mounting bolts to hold things in place. It's a bugger to have to put the pieces back together the first time.

thanks

I sent it to a rebuilder in Phoenix

The rebuilder said 6-8 days if they can find parts

Anyone know where to get a REBUILD KIT???

Anything missing that anyone noticed? I am not sure what’s supposed to be there...
This is what it looks like when I removed it from the truck:

I would look in the starter hole in the starter plate, inspect the ring gear and make sure you didn’t break off teeth there if nothing looks obviously broken on the bendix.

Seeing the barcode label I'll bet it's already been rebuilt, but that may be just for the motor and not the drive. Under the spring there are a pair of dogs that will break.

The tang on this one was ready to go.

This is an original type starter.

This is a reman from NAPA (I've been running it on 12 volts).

If you get one of this type of drive it may not fit between the flywheel and clutch housing. You will have to grind away some on the housing.

Wow, thanks for all that info and especially with pics. That is very helpful to actually see examples
