You mean it is spinning but not engaging. If that's the case, you may have some teeth broken off on the flywheel/flexplate.
Usually, if a starter goes bad, the windings of the starter stick to the side walls of the starter enclosure and it doesn't turn at all. In that case, you tap on the side of the starter with a pair of pliers or hammer and it'll start. You could just take the starter completely out and take it to a parts store where they could test it for you. If you have the money, get that one rebuilt or buy a brand new one. It seems like 3 out of 4 rebuilt starters never work and it's such a hassle till you get a good rebuilt one

I'd get a second opinion. Seems too high, although I don't know where you live, things are a little cheaper here in the middle of no where. Are you mechanically inclined or have any buddies that could help you do it. It's not really a hard job. If you have a Hayne's manual, you could do it yourself after buying or renting a few tools. I tackled mine two years ago with no previous experience doing that before and never really had any difficulties, just questions that can be easily answered by some of the fine folks at this website.
