I ahve an 1980 Bronco with the 351M engine. When starting, three out of four times the engine will turn over for a few revs and then the starter kicks free with a whirring sound. I have to wait until it stops turning and then try it again. sometimes I have t o do this three or four times.
I am assuming this is a starter problem and not a flywheel problem. Wouldn't there be a grinding noise if it were the flywheel?
A mechanic told me it is beter to have a local rebuild shop rebuild the starter rather than buying new one. He said the rebuilt orignal starter were much better than the replacemnt after-market jobs. He said his shop will only use rebuilt original; they had gotten tired of repeated failures of after-market starters.
Thoughts?

Your starter bendix is kicking out before the engine has a chance to start. I have used rebuilt starters for years and have not experienced problems like the one you mentioned. Get a good quality remanufactured starter from a reputable parts house.
You can also get your starter rebuilt if there is a local rebuilder lin your area.
