Sticky steering
Bled the PS system. no leaks, no noises nothing.
But in the process of replacing my input shaft seal I did pull hard on the column several times and pushed hard to drive the seal in using the column and a piece of pipe between the column and the seal. It did work but....
The steering is now consistent. But it has a few spots where its binding. Also the steering wheel is hard to turn. It also doesn't return (at all) while driving. My alignment is off so it pulls to the right, which it almost didn't do when letting go off of the weel. I loosened the clamp that is around the steering column at the firewall. Didn't help.
I did notice that my steering wheel was also kind of rubbing against the metal column in the truck. You can hear it when I turn it.
Any ideas what my issue could be?
Thanks in advance!
"Typically, poor steeringreturn-ability is caused bysteering gear that is too tight or improperly adjusted. ... Sticking or binding components, such as a king pin, ball joint, bell crank or even the steering column can prevent the steering wheel from returning to center after a turn."
It is returning ever so slightly. my guesses are on the column. All the parts you mentioned are good as far as I know, because before doing this job it steared great.
My guess is at the column.
Before startup I filled up the PS pump tot the top put in the dipstick and started slowly steer slightly left and right. Increasing my throw as I went. Adding fluid checken the dipstick shutting the engine on and off. Repeated this process.
Upon startup the steering box did make a grinding noise but it quickly went away during the bleeding process. I guess I'll remove the column again from the input shaft and see if it's hard to turn or not. I'll keep you updated!
Bleed p/s the FORD way and it works every time!!!
1- Hook everything up
2- Fill with fluid
3- Jack up front of truck off of ground (Both front wheels)
4- Disconnect or Disable coil (So Truck CANNOT start)
5- Turn Steering wheel lock to lock about 5 to 10 times
6- Top off Fluid
7- Repeat Step 5
8- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
9- Crank engine over (Ignition Disabled) and turn steering lock to lock 5 to 10 times
10- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
11- Repeat Step 9
12- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
13- Enable Ignition
14- Start Truck and turn Lock to Lock 5-10 times
15- Turn off Truck
16- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
17- Repeat Step 14
18- Repeat Step 15
19- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
