Steering column clicking

I replaced my steering shaft a few months back to eliminate drifting from a worn rag joint. Steering is great but I'm feeling a little click when turning the wheel. I took the steering wheel off and turned the column with a pair of mole grips and the clicks still there. It feels as if its somewhere on the column and not on the new shaft. Any ideas anyone?

I'm thinking there's a bearing/bushing in the bottom of the column, but never got into one before. What about popping it apart at the box, and trying it again? See if it helps isolate it for sure?

It feels like its nearer the top but I could be wrong

My bet is your top steering column bearing is gone, does your steering wheel wiggle?

There is a small amount of free play in it. Can the bearing be replaced or is it easier to put another column in?
