So I have done some searching around here and the internet in general and still don't know that I have the answer for my exact situation so hoping to get some help. I bought a 2012 XL F250 with power locks and windows and no remote start. The vehicle came with 1 key and it is programmed as a mykey so limited to 80 MPH , a quiet radio and maybe some other things. While I don't go over 80 much I really don't like the reminder at 75 or so and I would like to have more than 1 key. I don't have any experience with newer fords but my understanding and experiece with mid 2000s was that I needed to programmed keys to create a third. With only 1 can I not create another? If so do I have to go to a ford dealership and get new keys cut? Anyone have this done? Is it crazy expensive? Can independent locksmiths do this and do it cheaper? Is there anyway I can do it myself with an ODBII doggle and a laptop or phone?
I’d check with a locksmith. I’m pretty sure I’ve read other threads about people having it done. May be less expensive and less if a hassle than trying to do it yourself.
you can do it yourself now if you have a laptop and an OBDII adapter using FORScan.
Since you only have one key, do not matter if MyKey or not, you will need to have the PATS reset and programmed for two keys. Personally, I like to have a total of 3 keys for my truck. That way if I lose one, I can still do the programming of a "new" third key.
Call the local locksmith and ask them what it would cost to cut two additional keys and to reprogram PATS if you do not have access to FORScan setup.

Forscan won't unlock their pats feature until you verify you are a certified locksmith and they make it difficult to qualify. So no, Forscan won't help him. I have been there and done that with a '09 F350 repo I purchased that didn't have keys with it.
Edit to add: I went with a local locksmith instead of dealer and it wound up costing me more than the dealer. So price checking should be in order for the OP..

That is not correct. With the Extended License, you can use FORScan to re-program PATS. I believe it is the sames as Ford's IDS. If you do not have certification, it requires a 30 minute delay to enter the PATS programming.
What is Extended License, why and when do I need it?
Extended License provides access to Configuration and Programming functions of FORScan, and also few Service functions (such as PATS programming). Base FORScan functionality (connection, retrieving vehicle information, reading parameters, read and reset diagnostic trouble codes, run tests and service functions etc) do NOT require Extended License. There is a free 2 month Extended License that can be issued for anyone who has account on our forum. Also there are paid longterm and lifelong licenses. More information about Extended License can be found in this article.

Wrong! You cannot program a new key to a truck with FORSCAN unless you are a licensed locksmith. They have that feature turned off for a normal license and will turn that feature on once you prove you are a locksmith. I am sure they don't want the liability involved with someone stealing trucks and programming new keys for them.
Forscan has the feature but it is not activated for unlicensed people.
I know because I tried... Including using my shop license. It was denied because license wasn't locksmith.
I got a key cut today at a local locksmith. They wanted 65 for a key with no buttons or 180 for a key with them. I went for the cheaper option. On issue I do have is that the one remote key I have cycles the door locks when I start it. Locksmith could not figure out why but it's more of an annoyance than anything. She was going to ask there auto specialist if he knew how to fix that.

I've programmed 4 of my 6.7 trucks with forscan. You're doing something wrong.

Only 13 states plus NYC require a locksmith license. What if you don't live in one of those states?
Lol sure is old I didn't realize 🤣. You can also do firmware updates,Sync updates ECT.. There's a lot you can do people don't know about because it requires a decent amount of editing..
