No high idle

So the last two mornings it was in the teens when I started my truck, and it never went into high idle. I am wondering if it is because of a change I made in Forscan? It use to high idle, then we had some warmer temps and now it doesn’t. Any ideas other than undoing everything? I did perform backups before I started making changes I am just trying to avoid that route.

So, other than it not going into high idle as you expect, what is it doing that is causing a real problem? There is probably more than one data point to establish the engine going into high idle. Mine has done high idle only twice in the two years I've owned it.

Well nothing other than I was use to my 7.3 high idle. I know this is a different animal however shortly after I got it when it was in the low 30's it would high idle when first started. I just find it odd that starting it in 19 degree weather it doesn't idle up? I gave it 5 minutes or so while loading the kiddos up but nothing. You could be right, I am just assuming it should happen but I do not know all the conditions to trigger the event.

From the owners manual:

“In cold weather below 32°F (0°C), the engine may slowly increase to a higher idle speed if you leave it idling in park (P). As the engine warms-up, the engine sound level decreases due to the activation of PCM-controlled sound reduction features.”

Thats weird it didn’t high idle in the teens but does not necessarily mean you have a problem. I have had my truck not engage high idle a couple of times in about -5C weather. Still warmed up good.

I read that in the owners manual, I just wonder what temp sensor it uses? The coolant and tranny temps are always higher than the outside temp display.

I’m not sure what temperature it’s reading. I would assume coolant. My truck won’t wait for the glow plug light if I use my command start while the block heater is plugged in which is tied to coolant temp. That makes me assume coolant temp would operate the high idle. I could easily be wrong.

(I know these plugs heat fast, doesn’t matter. Truck won’t wait for glow plugs if plugged in. Tested numerous times, it doesn’t wait. This is a separate concern from OP so don’t reply to this info lol)

It is coolant temp and it’s freezing or 32 F that starts increasing hi idle. Once the engine is up to about 120 F the hi idle will turn down based on the coolant temp.

Sounds like you are saying High Idle once installed is driven by coolant temp.

I have to question that. High gives you the option to set the rpm at various points, I have mine set at 1200 rpm and coolant temp has no effect on it...

I'm looking at purchasing a high idle module for warm up, etc. The unit is plug and play. 1200-1400 rpm, nice for faster AC in the summer too. Many times by me it is below zero (F), and a 800 rpm idle isn't fun.

No High Idle installation is necessary, this is natural hi idle in the PCM. Built in.

I've had mine engage for just a short moment, then back to 750 rpm, windows were covered in ice, interior was freezing, etc.,it took forever to finally hit the road enough to see..........a must have for me, I had one on my '97 and it was awesome, it was a Ford module (APCM) used for pto, winch, jump starting a dead battery. Unless the factory pcm is programmable? 12volt solutions has the set up I'm interested in.

If this is SEIC we’re talking about, the engine coolant must be at least 40C.

I think what has happened is there are 2 different "high idle" system. One is the organic system built into the truck itself with the 6.7, the other is a dealer installed unit or you can install yourself. This a Ford part number. I have had it on 5 of my last 6 Superduty trucks. Its purpose is to idle the engine fast enough to prevent 'wetting' in the combustion chamber from let it normal idle for long periods of time. Some of these truck are never shutdown, they operate 24x7 out in the oil fields and in extreme cold climes. I use here in S Tx to keep the truck cool for my dogs when we travel and do things like stop to eat and its over 100F outside, I engage the parking brake, put the trans in Park and flip my number 2 upfitter switch and bingo I have high idle at 1200 rpm IIRC...

Cummins........press cruise “ON”; press “SET”; RPM goes to 1100. All the big trucks were the same way........IDK why FoMoCo has not figured this out yet. They seem to like lots of engineering of other things!
