I’ve been posting and asking questions. Figured I’d document the journey.
Son’s truck that we bought back in November. We’ve had to do some work to get it safe to just drive down our dirt road.
So far we’ve done the following:
- installed a Hurst floor shifter to convert from 3OTT
- replaced all wheel cylinders and brake springs and other hardware
- new fuel pump
- new starter and solenoid
- new carb
- rebuilt clutch linkages
Getting the truck to fire up today was a big deal. We were having a bunch of trouble and we tracked it down to a broken wire on the ignition coil. The engine would fire up when we brought it home but I think I snagged the wire when I pulled the steering column out to get at the brake and clutch column. Had a friend over helping and he spied the broken wire. Fired right up after that.
we had also replaced the carb with a $60 Chinese knockoff of the Carter YFA. It bolted right up and was easy to install. I haven’t hooked up the heat stove yet (will do that when we pull the motor) The motor runs very smooth and is quiet. I was amazed.
I really like the gangster color. That new clutch rod looks like the hot setup. Another thing to do is bronze bushing those pivot points.
It might be primer from the PO. His school colors are yellow and black. I have half a mind to let him rattle can the top and we paint his mascot on the doors. Paint is gonna be a ways off.
i got that idea from the Bronco guys. It cost about $25 to make and is pretty stout. I used plastic bushings that I believe I got from LMC. They’re not in the photo.
Awesome truck! Welcome to the Flareside... BTW, that's not a bump side....
see. This is why I only order off a menu when there’s a picture. Someone’s gonna need to post photos of what the different beds look like so I can figure what we got.

What you have is called a Flareside (commonly mis-identified as a step side). A bump side refers to the later generation of Ford truck. Our generation is known as the slick sixties.

That's 'cause some of us old guys always called them stepsides, kinda 'cause they have a step on the side. And 'cause it pisses Bill off. (runs and hides before Bill shows up)

I'll admit, I made the same mistake years ago while working on my oldest daughter's 77 f100.... Some parts houses still refer to them as stepsides, too.
