66 Flareside Build Thread

All the ones I frequent still do, always have.

- scribe/score reference lines 90 degrees to the center of the truck near the front and rear of each frame rails. Will be used for reference measurements in future.
- remove hood and front fenders.
looking ahead, we need to buy a brake booster and master cylinder combo for disc/drum setup. We will be doing the CV front end swap. Anyone have any input on these:

im specifically wondering about:
- booster size?
- master cylinder bore?
- do I need a “straight” bracket?
i know that I need a disc/drum setup. If I can pay a little less, it would be nice.
We’d like to use a bunch of chrome parts to give the engine bay a little sparkle.
We did a bit of work squaring up the rear axle. Doesn’t dog track as bad now. Not perfect, but good enough for now seeing as we are gonna take things apart and paint frame and do some other work involving the suspension.
after that we had some fun. I took each family member up and down that street and did some gravel road burn outs. My son got to drive his truck (and a manual) for the first time ever. It launches real nice with no gas needed. He only stalled once when he tried to stop with it in first. I think he gets it now that the clutch needs to be pressed or he needs to slide it into N when coming to a stop.
saturday has to start with a dump run to clean off my trailer. Then the crown Vic goes up on it and we’re gonna pull the motor, transmission and our front suspension. Motor and transmission will be sold off and we will start in on the suspension swap after extracting them.

We made a dump run, cleaned off my high side trailer, the loaded the CV up on it. You can see it in the background. Had planned on removing the front end while it was loaded to be able to deliver the carcass the the scrapyard. Not enough room though so it’s coming down and we will work on it in the dirt.
after that, my son got to work grinding rivets. I helped him drill and punch them after the heads were off, and I worked on installing a shop sink in the garage. Nice be washing our hands like civilized people rather than using the hose.
Last item of business was to make sure the new gas tank fit in there. Next up on Sunday will be figuring out how much clearance need on the top side and seeing how exactly we want to hang it in the back.
i put CV front in mine, haven't gotten it on the road yet. Got involved in buying and remodeling a house. About to get back on the truck project though. Its much more fun than carpentry!
The CV front swap isn't bad to do. Just have to get over that feeling of doubt. Did I measure right, should I cut this off, etc. Get your axle centerline, write down measurements from a couple reference points and go for it! One suggestion. If you don't have a front crossmember ahead of the front axle now, weld a chunk of angle iron across the frame rails for temporary support while removing the old and setting up for the CV stuff. I didn't and things moved. I had to park my daily driver next to the old truck to use come along to pull 1 side frame rails over a little bit before nailing down the CV axle. Other than that, it's pretty straight forward.
its great that your son is involved. Hopefully he gets the classic truck bug! It's always great seeing young guys getting into it! Most highschool kids can't drive a stick, your son is rebuilding a truck. Way to go!!
