66 Flareside Build Thread
I think we nailed it. The center lines that we had scribed worked perfectly. We located and drilled out holes for the guide pins, everything fit perfect.
We were able to drill out the holes for the crush tubes and start grinding off the excess frame from cutting them out of the cv.
still need to finish a little bit of clean up and fitment. Should be able to work on that later this week though.
Tomorrow we are gonna get the crush tubes and the last part of the missing cross member welded in. some priming and painting will follow and then the frame will get boxed. Hopefully we will have the cv cross member mounting all wrapped up here soon.
I will have to look at mine as it's been a while since I have worked on it. When it comes time to hook up steering shaft, I used the stock CV lower shaft with that funky joint. I took the ujoint off bottom of my stock 65 f100 column and ground a flat on it so I could use the D style shaft connect. I bought a ujoint off eBay that went from the Ford end on the CV shaft (triangle shape I think) to the D shape shaft. Why I have to look us that I think I had to push the column down about 2 inches. I haven't finished it yet but I have to move the plate on the column that attaches to the dash and reweld it to column for it's new position. I think after I ground my shaft for the D style I found a ujoint that has the right spline for the stock truck column. I stayed with the ujoint I have since I already ground the shaft. I don't think I have any pictures but I can try getting a couple shots if the rain gives me a chance. Let me know if you want to see it.
Good luck with your project. Looks like you are doing a nice job!
I'm really pleased you stuck with the straight six. Great old engines. Put in a Pertronix electronic ignition kit to get rid of the points and condensor, and you will have a rock solid setup. My 65 has a 302 with a Pertronix and a carb, fires right up, every time. No points to adjust!
Great that your son is elbow deep into it, he will learn a lot, and appreciate everything he breaks........
pics of progress:
we’re also waiting on some leaf spring bushings.
we ended up selling the rest of our donor Vic for scrap and parts. Got all we had invested back out of it. Free front end and a set of wheels and tires!
next step this week is to try and fab up some motor mounts.
Drivers side
Passenger side
Listing very slightly to the passenger side
Oil pan clearance. Slightly skewed side angle. There’s an inch and a half easy on the passenger side
No crane support!
Slight pressure on the torpedo to level things out. Close enough for these amateurs.
The next step is to flip the rear axle (above the leafs) and ensure that the centerline of the axle and driveshaft are all as should be.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
lol. Nope. It’s so slightly out of level from side to side. Sitting in the truck will likely level it out or throw it the other way.
We were able to get All the welding/boxing for the crown Vic front end finished, c notch the frame in the rear, and sand and paint the frame in June/July.
We took a month off during August and now we’re getting back to it.
New tubing should arrive today to begin installing new brake line on the rear axle and running a line to the engine bay.
New fuel tank will get installed and plumber too this weekend.
Also have a call into a local welding shop to get a cab corner patched so we can work on painting the cab and getting it back on the frame.
pics will come as we make progress.
Front Driver side lines.
Tank almost completely mounted.
Routing fuel and brake lines
New tank plumbing
New fuel filter. Needs a clamp to keep it off the frame.
