I have a couple questions for the folks who have done the Saginaw power steering pump conversion.
No donor to pull parts from so I have picked up a NOS mounting bracket, AC Delco pump, Dorman pulley, and Gates high pressure hose for a 94 E-150 w/5.8 to swap over my 94 F-150 w/5.8.
Will I be able to reuse the existing bracket to head mounting bolts in the truck assuming they don't break during removal? If not, what size bolts do I need?
From mocking up the bracket and pump on the work stand it looks like I need M10x1.5x20mm bolts to mount the pump to the bracket. Seem right?
Yes you can reuse the original bracket bolts to the head. I cant remember what size the bolts were for the pump as I bought mine as a complete setup. Yes you can use ATF fluid. Also, where did you get the new bracket?

Hi i am thinking about doing this did you have to buy special hoses for hook up , and and you add some Pics , I have 1990 front serpentine drive brackets on my 74 351w .
You will need a pump, pulley, bracket, and high pressure line. The truck low pressure cooler/return line will work, but I replaced the flexible section with a longer length hose.
The most common donor for parts is a late 80's or early 90's Ford van equipped with a 302 or 351. Some where in the mix Ford changed AC refrigerant, and so the AC compressors changed. So, if you are running AC you need to make sure you get the right bracket.
I used all new parts (except for the pump which is a reman) for a 1994 Ford E-150 equipped with a 351. The only thing that is difficult to source is the bracket, which you would most likely have to get from a junk yard.
Now, all that said this mod works in the bricknose and OBS trucks because they use the same steering gear box as the vans. I don't know if the gearbox in your 79 is compatible... I would think so, but something to look into. Pretty sure I have seen conversion kits online, but probably not for a serpentine belt set up.
There's 2 ways to mount/utilize a Sag pump. Somewhere in the past (late 70s-early 80s) Ford used Sag pumps in trucks outright.
They were capable of bolting directly in any place anywhere the Ford corporate type II pump was used. The pump shaft is a press on type & interchanges perfectly with the original Ford pulley.
It does so with a C shaped, 3 bolt spacer on it's face. This pump was available from Cardone under a specific part #. I did this conversion & had a shop fab a high pressure line.
This was so popular here that the supply of these pumps dried up completely & the part # is no longer valid. You might actually find one on the shelf somewhere down there in NZ.
I'll see if I can find the # in my stuff.
The van pumps are readily available through other companies like Rock Auto. Look at listings for 94-95 E-250, 5.8s
You must use the van bracket AND the press on pulley because the shaft is different from your stock pulley on your 90 pump if you are using that.
I don't know if you are using AC & if the compressor mount is front mount or the later saddle style mount on your engine.
Don't have pics of the front of the van bracket, just the rear, this is from a 95 E-250:
Pump & pulley diferences:
I use Havoline pwr steering fluid. Clear, mixes with anything. A member looked up the late 90s fluid requirement in a Van manual & it showed Mercon to be used.
So Mercon V should be fine for use in the pump & easy to source.
Hope this helps & doesn't confuse the hell out of you.
Hi , great all good info , so was there a serpentine pulley for the .750" pump ? I know you could bore it out , I think now with all the info and the hard to get bracket , and me not wanting to chop up and modify my 90 a/c pump bracket , which i am capable of welding , i will most likely keep the old pump which is quiet enough for me and i haven't had any issues . Cheers .

I think that "somewhere in the mix" must have been around 1987, because my AC compressor bracket does not look the same as all the other examples people have been posting. This is on my 1987 F-150 XLT Lariat 5.0L 4x4 auto Transmission short bed. I have a 1989 F-150 with 5.0L that is/should be identical in every way, except it's a long bed. -only it does have the bracket for the p/s pump and compressor that matches up with the saginaw bracket. I am not sure why this is, or how this will affect the ease of a conversion.... still trying to figure that one out.

Referring to the AC compressor: What do you mean by "front mount" or "saddle style mount"? And what are the differences. Could this be why the bracket is different between my two trucks?
