So I've recently purchased a 361 short block to replace the 361 in a 1973 f600. I noticed that the snout of the crank on the shortblock is 1 3/4" as opposed to 1 3/8". From what I've gotten from some old threads I believe the short block I've gotten is the 361 ft which has a larger forged steel crank. I've seen several posts that said the snout of the crack should be turned down to fit the old harmonic balancer and timing cover. I've found the correct harmonic balancer and timing cover to fit this engine but am not sure what other issues I might run into moving forward. Any help or information would be much appreciated.
If the old engine was a small snout it was probably a 330 or a FE that was swapped. A FT uses tons of different external accessories. Was the old engine side mounted? Or was it mounted from the timing cover?
Racers who use the forged steel cranks found in 391 and 361 CID FE engines invariably turn the snout down to enable use of HP dampers and standard accessory drive components. If you are simply restoring your F-600, there is no need to deviate from stock dimensions. It's just harder because there are fewer optiions to choose from.
Might want to check the distributor support bore and compare block in truck and oil pump driveshaft. Not sure on if was all the truck engines or just the HD had the larger setup.
