I have a chance to get a mid-70s FT 391 for free, with about 50K or so on it. The truck is an F-600 flatbed that a brick wall fell on about 25 years ago, and the owners are ready to have it hauled off.
My '66 F-100 352 spun a bearing, and I need a motor badly. I tried 2 years ago to help a friend replace a 361 FT with a 390 FE, an I learned about the difficulties.
However, would the same issues exist for an FT to replace a 352? Here are the questions I need answered to know if this will work.
Will the following FE parts fit the FT:
1. intake;
2. exhaust manifolds (I still have the original log type, and don't want to change);
3. C-6 flex plate;
4. power steering and A/C brackets;
5. crank and water pump pulleys to run the accessories
6. Engine mounts.
Finally, I know the FT crank snout is larger in diameter. It uses a front engine mount as part of the timing chain cover.
The FE uses a crank snout spacer over the crank to mate with the timing cover front engine seal.
I have always wondered if the FE timing chain cover would mate with and seal the FT crank snout, without using the FE spacer?
1. You can't use a FE intake with FT heads. The exhaust cross over is in a different location. FT intake and heads or FE intake and heads.
2. You will need to use the FT distributor or get a new bushing to adapt a FE dist.
3. Most people just get the crank snout turned down to FE specs.
4. The FT block and crank are much stronger than the FE.
Banjo, sure you can do it. But as you found out before, there are some difficulties that will slow you down. 1. the intake, yeah, it fits.....but the are problems because the heat risers aren't the same. 2. exhaust manifolds, same issue, they'll fit on the engine, but there are those heat risers in the differant place again. Yes, all off these difficulties can be plugged and overcome, but it may well be cheaper and easier to get FE pieces to start with. 3. the flexplate will bolt on to the FT crank just fine. BUT the balance is differant in the FT, they are externally done. So you would have to have some weight welded onto the flexplate. AND the pilot bearing register is deeper on an FT, that might hit the convertor. 4&5 the timing cover and mounts and such on an FT are cast iron and enormous. Do you really want all that under the hood of your truck ? 6. engine mounts. The FT has the same holes on the side of the block, no problem there. So sure, you can do it. But as far being quick and easy, no,its not. If you can get a good price on the 600, take it. You can sell the block and crank and the 5speed & bell and clutch gear and then have some bucks to fix your 352. DF

Thaks for the advice, DF, I appreciate it. And, you are right, I didn't think about selling the crank - I'm sure I can find an buyer!
It is free to me, just to haul it off.
