I'm told 78-79 side tanks are no longer available. I took the tank out of my cab, and am now looking to mount a side mount/saddle (midship?) tank as soon as possible. This is for a 78 supercab 4x4.
I was just pondering the same thing. Which leads me to ask if 2wd and 4wd supercab long beds use the same tanks. If so, they’d be more readily available. Hope you don’t mind the piggyback on your thread.
I've been pondering the idea for a long time now.... modifying a 2010-2014 F150 side-mount tank to work under my 1979 F250 4x4.
The initial dimensions of each vehicle tells me it could work... but would take a lot of effort to make the sending units and holes operate as they should.
Might be something to look into. Either way, I'm subscribing.
Pretty sure that 2wd reg cab (fwd of the axle) side tank is a metal tank held up with 2 straps, tank and straps reproduced. 4wd reg cab (fwd of the axle) is a plastic tank with the IMPOSSIBLE to find tank support cage that is not all rusted out. How bad you need a 4wd plastic side tank?
I know a guy....
I think it's D8TZ-9002-G for the 78/79 F-150 supercabs. That's what I've always seen when looking for myself. I've not yet dropped my side tank but it appears to be "intact" as best I can tell.

I do not think there is a difference between the 2wd and 4wd tanks. But as mentioned they are unique and not reproduced. So if you see one at your parts yard, get it!
He didn't say if it's a 1/2 or 3/4 ton but I'm pretty sure they both used the plastic tank. There is no practical way to mount the steel tank. There has to be something else out there that would fit with minimal work. On the other hand why not just put a rear tank in ? All those parts are available.
Ok. Just looked under the 78 f350sc 2wd longbed and the 79 f350sc 4wd long bed. Both have dual tanks. Both are steel, and both are the same shape. I know dad replaced the tank in the 4wd and I do not see a skid plate, nor do I know if there ever was one or if the original tank was steel or not. I can say that from outward appearance, they mount the same and look identical.
From what i understand, the only difference between the SC half, 3/4 and one ton (4wd) is the suspension and running gear. They all have the same frame and components otherwise. I will gladly take a correction if I am wrong.
