When I installed my injectors I torqued them to 130 inch pounds. Well it has been a few thousand miles most of which was towing a 5th wheel and I decided to pull the valve covers and check the torque.
Most of the right bank, with the exception of 1 injector, were all just over 100 inch pounds. The left bank were mostly in the low 90s so considerably looser.
Re-torqued them all to 130 inch pounds. Was going to do the hot re-torque but the forecast has a lot of rain and snow so I need to get this truck up and running quickly.
After Christmas I will finish reassembly and report on whether this quieted my truck down significantly.
Good stuff! I'm going to have a look under my VCs for all the usual suspects here soon and hope to improve multiple aspects of my truck at once including this one!
My wife and I recently traveled cross country in our Subaru. We had the opportunity to meet @Wesley Green and his great 7.3L truck. As soon as he started to turn into the parking lot and then into the space I asked my wife "is his engine quieter than mine?" She agreed it was and the only thing Wesley and I could come up with was that he hot torqued his injectors recently.
I have not touched the injectors since buying the truck 6 years ago and can only assume the injectors are now 20 years and 1 month old. The truck runs great, but is certainly louder in the "sewing machine" category than Wesley's truck.
A year or so ago I met with @akcooper9 and I did not notice a difference between his truck and mine, but I cannot remember for sure and don't remember if he has re-torqued his injectors either.
I will be meeting up with @SkySkiJason very soon and am interested to see and/or hear any of the trucks he may have at the time. I have only been in the presence of single shots once or twice and never hybrid injectors. Should be a good trip that will allow me to learn some maintenance and catch up with a friend I haven't seen in a while.
In my opinion there is some validity to hot torque procedures, this has been proven time and time again. Although when I had the valve covers off a year ago during the SXE install, I didn't mess with the working injectors or their hold down bolts.
I considered the hot torque method but thought this time around that a standard re-torque would be the best option. No doubt I will be back under the hood sometime in the future as my 42 pin connector no longer bolts together. I have it held tight by a zip tie at present.
Shade tree mechanic lies deep in my background. LOL
