You ruin a $25 seal in the process.

Ok, but I'm not sure where you are going with this?? If it arrives damaged, then I HAVE to fix it, no matter the cost of the seal, right?

I think he was just giving you a heads up on needing the seals if the backing plates get bent...

I have had success in bending bent backing plates back into shape with a pair of vice grips/pliers.

I bought a salvage axle....and the backing plates were beyond repair. So, it was a set of new backing plates and seals....it was easily over $100. Plus my time.

It's just an FYI...that's all.

I'll do my best not to destroy the parts I just purchased. Thanks. :-)

I do have a little experience working with a variety of tools, broken and bent things. :-)

Thank you both for your advice.

Finally got my shipping notice for the rear axle. It's supposed to arrive Friday the 3rd. They also sent me the warrantee info, good for 6-months/6,000 miles. Then the bad news, they determined the driveshaft was not up to snuff and canceled it. So, more searching for that. Every Junkyard site does want to know what gear I want and they do list different shafts for the 3.73 and the 4.30. I got lucky and found a 2003 Ex in a local yard, 4.30 axle is gone but per their inventory, it still has the shaft. Just waiting for a confirmation that is is still actually there and in good condition and I will go pick it up.

A local driveline shop can probably get you set up with whatever you need. I would get the axle on hand and compare it to what you have before buying anything else. You'll probably want the u-joints exchanged anyway. A new yoke is not usually too expensive if you need something different...

The local trusted drive line shop (Miami Drive Line) seems to have closed. Not sure who else locally I would take it to. Miami seems to be lacking in many things these days. Funny, changing U joints is how I got here in the first place. I was only changing them as I had reached 150k on the originals, no problems with them other than age and mileage. Thinking that I'm doing L/D towing, replace them before a problem. Instead, I created a problem. If I had left them alone...

Rear just arrived. Backing plates are bent up bad. It has a standard yolks on the pinion shaft and not the plate. Does tha make this the wrong rear or is that why I need a different drive shaft?

If you want to, you can swap the flange over. @Nicmike swapped one on his rear.

That is an option, but paying for a complete rear, I'd like to make sure this one is correct/comparable. I understand as it moves from. Pickup to the Excursion som things may be different. I'm just not wanting to have to put $$ into a rear that per the seller is supposed to fit the Ex.

The ex's did come with some different driveshaft options so it very well could still be out of an ex. However assuming the splines are the same the flange should swap over. The brake backing plates-i just bought a set for mine off of rock rock for $89. The wheel seals and o ring and parking brake parts were another $100.
