Installing a new trailer brake controller cause the old one was shot. It was hardwired in directly to the battery, the OEM harness was cut and couple of the wires were used and the rest were left hanging and exposed. Going to go through the fuse boxes as soon as I find out what number fuses I need to check. But since the harness was cut I was wondering what you guys would do to connect a brake controller. I checked the wires and none of them have power key on or off, brake pedal pushed, and pickup running.
P.S- the wire colors are Black, White, Blue, Red, and Blue with a pink stripe if that would have things out.
My 2005 was in a similar boat when I got it. Horrible cheap brake controller hacked into the stock wiring. I got an OEM plug & repaired the stock harness. I don't remember where I got the plug from, but you can probably pull one with most of the wiring harness from a junkyard pretty cheap. Pulled the Prodigy P3 out of my Tacoma & made a Tekonsha to Ford plug. I'm a fan of leaving things stock if possible to make maintenance for the next idiot to repair (which is usually me) despite having the skills & tools to do up some pretty nice custom wiring. There is a good chance a hack job isn't properly fused and/or is using improperly sized wiring. With stock wiring there is generally less confusion on colors as the the schematics in the back of the repair books will match, assuming you grab parts from a close model year with matching wiring harness.
The P3 is a good controller, although the buttons were getting a bit sticky.
So there is a wiring harness to plug into under the dash for controllers. Wonder if that point is hacked up. etrailer.com can probably obtain the correct plug in for the harness under the dash.
I do still need to go through and check any fuses and relays if there are any that are a part of the TBC system. Does anyone know what fuses I’d need to check, it would make it a lot easier and save time for me. And if anyone has some pictures of a shop manual for these things that show the wiring diagram. I’d like to go through and check everywhere I can on the wiring side of things to make sure nothing is damaged
