Recently my 1995 f150 302 with AOD transmission has been shifting hard from 1st gear to 2nd gear. I was thinking of swapping out the transmission filter, but I was told that by doing so I might completely damage the transmission.. how true is that statement?
Sounds like it might need some new springs in the valve body. The 1-2 shift accumulator(?) typically breaks and will cause a real harsh 1-2 shift if you are into the throttle pretty good(like getting on the highway). Pretty simple fix, I had mine done by a buddy with transmission shop because of the same symptoms.

A 1995 model year F-150 w/5L engine came with a 4R70W or E4OD transmission. Both are electronic controlled. Any sensor input out of range can result in a hard shift. Pull the codes.

Completely false.
Yes I read up on that...but when I matched the transmission oil pan to a chart . It matched up with a 14 bolt pan which on the chart was an AOD TRANSMISSION PAN

These codes are most likely the cause of your rough shifting issue:
Code 121 (KOEO/KOER) Closed throttle TPS voltage higher or lower than expected. (CM) TPS sensor was inconsistent with the MAF value
Code 122 (KOEO) TPS circuit below minimum 0.6 volts. (CM) TPS circuit has intermittently failed below minimum 0.6 volts.
These codes are most likely not causing your shifting issue, but need addressed.
Code 172 (KOER/CM) HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean
Code 334 (KOEO/CM/KOER) EVP circuit above the closed limit of 0.67 volts
Code 337 (KOEO/CM/KOER) EVP circuit above the maximum limit of 4.81 volts.
Code 552 (KOEO) Air management 1 circuit failure (TAB)
