Help diagnosing overheating 6.0

My brothers 6.0 has been overheating almost every day lately and pissing out coolant
truck has the following done
egr delete
head studs and gaskets
new radiator
new degas bottle
water pump stress test was fine

while cruising at 70 on the interstate the truck will be fine and then coolant will jump from 194 to over 200 and oil will jump from 198-202 to 300+ within 30 seconds and my brother has to race to shut the truck down
ford dealership wants to put a new engine in rather than try to fix the problem
when the truck gets hot, it’s pissing coolant out the bottom of the radiator by the time he gets to a stop

photo if bottom passenger side of the radiator, there is a small high pressure stream of coolant coming out from between the metal tube and the radiator hose

I moved your question to the 6.0L PSD engine forum. This crew will give you some great advice.

Good luck!

Looks like a pinhole in the plastic tank. I'd replace the radiator first, and while you're at it, replace the thermostat as well. Might also want to verify the electronic fan clutch is operating correctly to engage the fan when needed. I had a very slight leak out the side seam of mine that was also causing an overheat condition, though nowhere as severe as what you're seeing. I went with an aftermarket aluminum radiator rather than a factory one with the plastic end tanks, but did have to modify the trans cooler fittings to make it work.

Well, they're probably right.......Replacing the engine would certainly "FIX the problem" They probably suggested that because when the oil gets far enough above 300degrees, the plastic parts in the oil filter housing melt and end up coating internal oil passages effectively destroying the engine.

It really sounds like the oil cooler is plugged, along with other places in the engine.

I would verify the temps though. Get an infrared temp measuring device and "shoot" the T-stat housing, and maybe the oil temp sensor area and make sure the sensors are not lying. Then I would put a pressure gage on the cooling system and see if the "pissing coolant" is due to a leak or high pressure (or both)
The coolant cap *should* of course, vent long before other areas start leaking but it would be good to know.

Has the thermostat ever been changed? If it's sticking it will definitely over heat but I am suspicious of 300degree oil. (If you REALLY have had 300+ degree oil, The engine is likely "DONE")

Others will respond here with more detailed info.

Sorry about that......

Rick

I was going to suggest the fan clutch, many are worn out by 150k miles but don't notice it since the temp increase happens over time. But 300°+ oil temps is awfully high.

I replaced my fan clutch and it was a very noticeable difference.

That radiator needs replacing from the pic you posted (is it the old one or the new one that is squirting coolant?). Also, remove the oil filter and check the standpipe for deformation as Rick is suggesting (melting or softening plastic).

Sounds like the oil cooler bypass valve might be opening up.

Oil cooler bypass valve (from BulletProof Diesel) Product Code: 90100115

https://www.bulletproofdiesel.com/se...100115&Submit=

Then again it might be opening up because of too much pressure drop through the oil cooler, or it could even be something more serious I suppose.

Just for giggles, make sure the radiator hose isn't collapsing.

  • he would be on his way to the side of the road to shut the truck off when he sees 300, the truck wouldn’t/hasn’t spent more than a few sec at that temp before he shuts it off

The plastic can get soft over 300. It will melt quickly at 350.

Is that green coolant I see or are my eyes playing tricks?

Sounds like a bad thermostat, bad oil temperature sensor and looks like a bad radiator and possibly needs a new oil cooler.
Are we looking at green coolant or is that a photo issue?

I'm also questioning the oil temp sensor - 100* delta in 30 seconds sounds almost impossible

Yeah I bet they do want to just put a new engine in instead of fixing the issue. I wouldn’t take any vehicle to a Ford mechanic, they seem to have similar training everywhere...just throw parts at it.

I would check the oil temperature sensor pigtail. I had a similar issue happen with my temps. Especially the sudden spike and drop. Turns out it was the wires where they go into the connector.
