Question Oil change mess

Changed the oil on my 66, 352 today. What a mess. Anybody got any tips on draining the oil when the plug is above the frame member. There has gotta be some gizmo or device to help stem the mess.

thanks

I have used aluminum foil to make a diversion over the cross member. There is the commercially available "Form-A-Funnel" as well.

I plan to install an oil drain valve which takes a special spigot hose assembly on my next oil change to clean things up.

With these you don't need any special hose or adapter.

I wonder if you've got the right pan on the 352. My 352 pan has the plug at the back just at the back edge of the crossmember and while a tiny bit does get on the crossmember when I got the truck it had a 390 with a car oil pan on it and the drain was just above the crossmember so pulling it would cause the oil to drain right on the crossmember. That pan made it a big mess. The stock pan seems fine to me.

It very well might have the wrong pan. Engine was gone thru in 2011 or so and I have noticed the crank pulley has "390" marked on it but you just never know.
Anybody know the thread size for the drain plug?

Mine is the same way. I used a longer funnel and it worked ok. But yeah it is certainly tucked up on top of the cross frame. When I have engine rebuilt i will put in the Fumoto drain valve.

Anybody used the Fumoto drain valve? Leaks, drips any downside to this valve?

I put a 390 crank and rods in the 352 - crank counter weights hit stock oil pan so had to replace. Original had drain plug at corner of sump so oil draining was no big deal. Replacement pan was at mid-sump right on top of cross member. I just shape a scrap piece of cardboard to divert oil to drain pan - cheap, easy, no mess.

Fords often had drain plugs over the crossmember. They were messy oil changes.
