Tach install suggestions

We are about to hook up a tach, and I am wondering if instead of running my source wire all the way to the coil if I can tap into the wire from the coil before it gets to the plug to the ICM?

Any issues? Too much draw for the wire feeding both the ICM and tach?

The pic with my finger is where I think I can tap it in from the tach.

Wire from coil before it gets to the plug for ICM. Tap here?

negative source wire for tach on top side of harness.

It may work but I always hate cutting into factory wiring for any reason , besides your already going thru fire wall , just run it thru wire loom to coil is the way I would do it ,,

I think we will run the wire all the way to the coil. Now just deciding the best way to tie it in.

I want to avoid the clip on splices if possible.
It would be tough to do a solder splice (not much slack)
I am thinking of cutting the end at the coil to leave about 4 inches and attaching a female bullet connector. Then feeding both wires (tach and ICM) into the male end.

Something like this.

Suggestions?

Yeah that would work but when I did mine I used this , its a solder type connector used with heat gun to install , I really like the solder type , works well if done right

I've got some of those too, there is just not much elbow room and with mine they seem to take more heat than I expected to get the solder to melt.

The bullet ones I have are heat shrink, just without the solder.

We'll give it a go and see.

Thanks for the input.

I use a industrial type heat gun with this attachment , keeps heat contained and lets it heat smaller area so solder melts and yes you do have to get the heat up high for solder to melt , but any way you do it will work , the heat shrink is always good either which way you do it

I'll look into getting one of those for my heat gun. I used those solder butt connectors on the inside. Used a small torch. I don't really want to use it near the carb and fuel pump.

No I wouldn't use a torch either in that area , but a real good heat gun will melt the solder , I bought one of these off ebay, its Milwaukee 8977 Variable Temperature Heat Gun , for like $45 used,,, and its paid for itself several times over on my project , and comes with attachments ,,I love this thing ,

i tapped into the wire at the firewall as you showed.

I hear you all on cutting into the factory harness however I did the work so I know what was done if I would need to trouble shoot in the future.

I use to have mine at the coil then realized I could do it on the ignition module side of the connector for it. So thats where it is now.

I like your idea of tapping into the icm box. My question.." Looks like you are pointing at the green wire from the 4wire bundle off of the icm? Is that the correct wire? Anyone have information about the correct color of wire? Im sure it is the 4wire and not the red/white 2 wire.

Thanks for the help. Chris

It should be. Just trace the wire back from your coil to double check. We spliced it in as I showed in the other picture. Works just fine.
