This is my first time putting a tach in something. My truck is an '86 F-150 5.0 (EFI). I just got me a small, cheap little tach. I am just curious about my RPM in the verhicles I drive. I just like to have a tach.
My main question is how to I hook up to the coil? I know where the coil is at. I know that you are supposed to hook to the negative side of the coil. I don't see any wires going into the coil except through a harness. I noticed on the a chart that came with the tach that it said something about hooking to the coil and something about a dark green/yellow stripe wire. I noticed a wire like that on one of the harnesses. Do I splice into this wire? Thanks for the help, this is common knowledge for most, but not me.
What's the best thing to hook the hot wire to, and the ground wire to? Pictures aren't required, but they would be nice if anyone happens to have some already. Thanks, again.
Thanks a bunch, man. I will have this thing hooked up tomorrow. I had to run out and get some more electrical tape (mine always disappears), and some more wire. 18ga wire is good enough, I suppose. Thanks, again!
Ok, I got it in, yesterday. Worked on the first try, thanks for the help. I just spliced into the proper coil wire.
My brain just locked up and I can not for the life of me remember my tire size... and it's too cold to walk to the end of the driveway just to see :-P. I'll post them later, but for anyone interested...
My 5.0 EFI with NP435 (4-speed with low/bulldog) and a 3.50 axle:
25mph in 4th = 1100RPM
55mph in 4th = 2300RPM
And I also wound 4th out to 4000RPM, but my speedo was maxed out passed 85.
What is the 'redline' for these trucks. Before I had a tach, if I ever 'wound' my gears out, I had only been winding them out to 4000RPM (sounded higher than that, to me). I'm so glad to have this tach. I'm actually turning lower RPM @ 55mph than I had thought, before. I was guessing 2700RPM or so, but 2200-2300RPM is much better.
