Trouble starting when warm

I have an F-350 with a 460.

If I drive for a while and it ends up hitting running temps and then stop and park, when I go to start the truck up again the starter sounds like it hangs. Real slow cranking or stuttering but the truck usually starts (sometimes it hasn't when I've been at highway speeds for a while).

What could be the cause? I had a broken starter and alternator earlier in the summer that I replaced with aftermarket (high end) parts and haven't had any issues really except for this one. Is it possibly the starter or something else?

Thanks guys.

First thing to do is, when it is hot and doens't want to start, pull the coil wire off the distributor and ground it, then try it again. If that makes the starter turn over normally, then you have too much initial timing.

Baseline everything in the starting system.

LOAD test the battery.

Check the amp draw when starting.

Check ALL the connections, particularly the grounds.

What was "broken" about the previous starter and alternator? These may have been symptoms of a problem that wasn't corrected by replacing those parts.

The previous alternator had an issue with the voltage regulator (battery would run flat when truck was completely off).

The previous starter had part of the outer casing break, which didn't allow the gears to mesh properly so it would spin, but not engage the engine.

I didn't have the truck long before I had to replace those parts, but it seemed to start just fine before those issues whether it was warm or cold.

It's very possible I need new grounds in the truck as well. When I was dealing with the alternator issue I had to swap batteries and the cables there were corroded so I'm guessing the rest are not great either.

I'm just wondering if the failed starter took out a few teeth on the flywheel which gets you your dragging/stuttering???

This wouldn't be temp dependent though..... unless...(now that I think about it)... clearances in the gear teeth/flywheel are JUST right so that when the engine is warm, there's more clearance and it's skipping a few teeth?

Just a swag.

I don't think it did, unless the teeth were ground into paste the flywheel seemed intact. I couldn't check every tooth but the section around the starter seemed in good repair. But, your point is still valid because if the teeth aren't engaging completely when it's cold (enough to get it moving, but barely touching) and then moving apart when it's warm that may be part of the culprit.

It still feels like there's something more there though.
