At first I thought it was the idler pulley. So I replaced it. Still squeaked. Got another one. Still squeaked.
I was about to replace the water pump, but then I noticed that the squeak is not in time with the pulley rotation - it is in time with the belt rotation. Every time the printed decal on the back of the belt goes past the idler, it squeaks.
I tried putting a drop of dish soap on the idler pulley - no change.
Could it be the tensioner itself squeaking as the thicker part of the belt goes by? I would not think the decal substrate was that thick.
I know it's not the water pump as when I remove the belt the water pump keeps turning from the other belt and it's silent.
I used a mechanic's stethoscope (what a neat gizmo!) and it's definitely coming from the idler mechanism - not the power steering pump and not the AC compressor.
I've used both Motorcraft and NAPA serpentine belts with good success---never a squeak or failure in over 200K miles three different 5.4's. Also used Motorcraft tensioners with similar results.
BTW Motorcraft can be had fairly priced through eBay and/or Amazon---well worth looking at when needing such things.
