i replaced the alternator, belt tensioner assembly, and the belt the other day. the only thing that made it stop sqeaking is the belt, so i took the rest of the stuff back and its been fine for a few days, now its sqeaking again.
the only thing that looks wierd about my belt system is the belt rides pertty far out on my water pump pulley. do you think this is whats maybe tearing up the belt and making it sqeak.
at this point i dont get it, i guess if it is the water pump pulley can i shim it with washers to make it sit farther out and see if that helps....
do this: with engine off, remove belt, grasp the pater pump pulley and try to move it on it's axis.
bet you found the problem.
ok i tired that the water pump doesnt seem sloppy, and it turns easy with no noise. when its running and sqeaking if i just shoot some wd-40 on anything to do with the belt system the noise stops, do you still think its the water pump...
I had a Camaro that went through belts like some guys go through underwear...
Turns out my idler pulley was just slightly crooked, making the belt sit funny on it. It increased the wear on the belt, causing it to *chirp* (which is insanely annoying). I went through four belts, two alternators, and a water pump before I finally figured it out. (I wasn't just swapping parts to see if it'd fix it... that's how many parts failed on it over a two year period...)
It could be that one of your pulleys (yes, even the ones on your water pump, alternator, etc...) could be off-kilter a bit, and is causing wear on your belt. Take the belt off, check ALL your pulleys, see if any of them wobble at all. If one does, that is likely your culprit. If not, it's a lot harder to check if they're crooked or not, but still possible.

BINGO !!!!!!!
Sometimes water pump pully assemblies are not pressed onto the shaft the right amount, especially the rebuilts.
If it can be brought into alignment by shimming, that is the first thing I would try.
This is probably what is causing the belt to squeel, and the overspray of the WD-40 when squirting other things is slightly getting on the belt making it quieter for a while after spraying.
I have a 89 302 that did the samething changed everything still made the noise put a gatorback belt on [no more noise ] thats been 7 mounths ago hope that works for you
ok guys im trying multiple things, replacing water pump and water pump pulley and also trying a gatorback belt. ill let you know which one fixes it, i wont trust anyhting though until one week from install if its still working.
ok so i bought a gatorback belt and a water pump, i put the belt on just to see if it would fix it. its been about a week now and ive put 200 miles on it and no even so much as a pep out of the belt.
im hanging on to the water pump for about another week then taking it back, thanks for the help guys, it seems a quality belt is all that i needed....
i have had dayco belts last a month and goodyear gatorbacks last the life of the vehicle.
hope that does it for you.
well the others i used were dayco's so ill never buy them again, even if this belt doesnt fix it forever those daycos suck pretty bad compared to this belt....
