'56 f100 build thread
This all took the better part of a weekend.
I blasted half of the frame and sprayed some vht to see how it would turn out.
Top fully blasted and half painted
Done with first round of paint
Pulled out the front axle
Lifted the front of chassis as high as I could with the hoist so I could blast and paint the bottom. This didn't lead to good enough results as I ended up doing manual cleanup of the frame later.
And the rear axle was out.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Welded in the front x-member first, then the 4-link mounts. Basically all of the welding I would need to do on the bottom side.
The mustang ii x-member was a little narrow so I made a couple of shims out of 3/16 plate steel. The front end came together pretty well but the springs were too long so I had to cut a coil out.
X-member gap. Needed shim in addition to boxing plate to fill.
Welded in the x-member while chassis was flipped.
After por15 and vht
Boxing plate
Front spring mount
Front boxing plate and shim
Rear c-notch. Instructions say to leave more than half of frame height
Flipping the chassis with a friend and a hoist
4-link mount
Mocked up without springs
The no limit fat bar setup is really nice but the instructions are limited in detail. I read several threads here on the forum that were a huge help!
Cleaned up and new gear cover in place.
Fitting the coilover mount
Upper coilover mount welded in
It fit perfectly
Everything tacked in. I then pulled it apart this morning and finished welding everything and painting it up.
Finished product
There is pitting on the floor but it doesn't feel weak. I'm deciding on if I need to do the whole floor or just a couple patches. I'm trying to save as much of the original metal as possible.
Cowl is pretty straight. Will need some work where the hood sits
Floors solid but had enough surface rust that I'm concerned about the pitting
Dash is a disaster and I would replace if it was available. It's cut in several places and dented in others. Tons of bondo
A couple of small rust holes above back window
Much of the cab back is solid
Roof seems okay but need to keep working around the edges to see if there's rust through
I cut this out of the top of the dash. I think it was where they mounted a cb or something
Cut and formed a panel for the dash to replace the bad metal.
This is the corner that is really thought. Took a big hit at some point. Will replace most of this.
You can see the damage a little better with primer on it .
