I have a 2001 F-150 SuperCrew with a 5.4 engine that's still in great shape despite 225,000 miles on the truck and a second engine. First engine went 155K, I installed a used engine with about 70K on it and it's still running strong at about 140K. I love the truck and other than the "no frills" of the era, i.e. no back up camera, everything about it but the gas mileage. As a daily driver I get 11.5 mpg in town (but it's chilly in there I used to say … could use an AC charge but we're headed into winter in So Cal ) and 17mpg loaded and road tripping but not trailering. Is it even realistic to think that I could drop a 6 cyl. Ecoboost in this truck without major modifications? If so, is it worth it? Or should I just look at this truck having high mileage, coming up on 20 years and move on? I appreciate all, well most all, thoughts and recommendations, and if it's move on …. what year used F-150 Ecoboost would you buy? I was in a 2015 Platinum Expedition with an Ecoboost the other day, the guy didn't know what engine but said he gets 17 mpg around town …. Thanks for the time and opinions!
Spend far less than an engine swap, use the truck like it is supposed to be used (a truck) and buy a used Fusion hybrid/Energi (or equivalent) for the commute. It is what I did and couldn't be paid to go back.
