After a lot of swearing and some persuasion with pry bars, and the threat of satanic force, she finally went in. Now to finish all the nit-picky crap and try to crank her over!
That high side PS hose looks grody. It would be prudent to swap it while in that deep...the pop at the worst times. Ask me how I know. Like the vacuum pump.
If you like colder AC, pull the evap and toss it. Replace with a new one. The fins always cake up with age and the time to clean it (plus cleaner) makes no sense. BTDT.
Trans is bolted to the engine and torqued, converter is bolted and torqued, starter is back in and wired up, down pipe is back in, and my new riff raff plenum boots and t bolt clamps are in (as well as the billet plenum inserts) fuel lines are hooked up, and I think that's all I managed to do today. Still have to do the motor mount bokts before I feel comfortable cranking her over, but hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to turn it over with the starter after I put oil in it and clear the cylinders so I can put the glow plugs and valve covers back on.
As for the power steering hose, I think itll be ok for a bit. Theres not a spot of rust under the hood, but that's only because everything has been thoroughly soaked in diesel and oil for the last 20 years.
I dropped a battery in yesterday and cranked it over without the glow plugs in to clear out the cylinders. Now I can button everything up. Got the valve covers back on, the front accessory drive back together, and most of the other little stuff. Radiator and front end should be done today and then I can try to fire her up.
I did find that there is a puddle of brake fluid under the back tire, so I'll be replacing wheel cylinders/brakes before I can drive it.
Well I got her all together and tried to fire her up. No dice. I think the CPS is bad. No tach while cranking. I cranked it in 20 second bursts anyways to try and fill the oil galley in the heads and prime the fuel. The bowl is filling up with the pump so I know that's working. No leaks anywhere, and no weird noises. Just no start and no smoke from the exhaust. New sensor (motorcraft) will be here tuesday and we will try again!
Put in my new CPS today. Still no rpm on the tach while cranking. Batteries died while I was doing my thing, so I am currently charging them. I got my forscan out and it reads the truck, so tomorrow I'll pull ipr, icp, and rpm pids to see what is going on with everything. I'm guessing the IPR needs to be replaced based on reading 10.0 ohms on the coil, and the spec being 10.2-10.6 (my reading was through the harness so I'm assuming it's at least 0.1 ohms higher than actual). We will see what tomorrow holds! Hopefully I can get her started!
After a good charge on the batteries, the CPS does in fact work. It was just cranking too slow to register. Cranked for a bout 4 cycles, and got it to hit. Couple more trys and she fired up! Loped real bad as expected until it smoothed out but she runs very smooth and much quieter than I anticipated. The turbo whistle through the stack is magical, and it sounds amazing!
