Unfortunately I'm dead in the water until I get another head. Turns out the guy screwed up the cup job on the passenger side and the bottom piece of the cup stayed in the hole. Instead of removing it carefully he went for bull in China shop approach. It looks like the head is deformed where the cup sits along the edge. Even if I can get the cup piece out, I dont think a new one will seal. Anyone have any extra heads sitting around? Lol. Not exactly the news I was hoping for.
Pull the engine, do not waste your time doing it in chassis. It will take far longer and you will be far more pissed off. No idea on what gaskets are best, I would use OE if I was you and do ARPs.
Besides, the oil pan leaks for sure as does the oil level sender adapter in the pan. Then you can replace the uppipes which are probably leaking, remove the flapper on the turbocharger pedestal, the flap in the adapter, 910s, etc. Yes, slippery slope. Definitely e-fuel it too while apart, these run much smoother with it.
You will not lose money invested into it with those mods.
I think my plan for now is to throw a head on it and run it. The plan for this truck is to drive while I'm putting the cummins together for my 2009, and then I can dive in and spend the money on this one. I'm not sure I can justify a couple grand for a rebuild on this joker right now
Well I started tearing into her. 2 hours to get the head off. Not too bad in my book. I had to make a tool to get the rear fuel line off, but other than that pretty easy.
I plan to eventually do a full rebuild, but this is to try and get me back on the road so I can work on my 6.4 before it gives up the ghost. I'm trying to get away with just a head and gaskets. I already received all new push rods and the o rings for the injectors as well as the new cups. Now I have to order head gasket and bolts but while I have it off I'm replacing the fuel hoses in the valley, the sleeves on the fuel line to the head, the oil galley plugs in the head, fuel bowl reseal kit, plenum boots and billet reinforcements for the plenum. Hopefully that'll be good enough to get back on the road. This joker still had the OE plenum boots on it. No way they weren't leaking. On the bright side, the up pipes arent leaking and look relatively newer. Not bellowed, but they'll do until I pull the motor for a rebuild
If you are keeping it, just efuel it. My kit was turn key and about $700 shipped. You will spend a pile of time and money limping that factory nonsense along. BTDT.

Efuel is on my short list of improvements, but I was told that it has a brand new fuel pump, and all of the fuel pump components are nice and shiny except the hoses. As soon as something quits it will be getting replaced with efuel but since I'm having to spend a couple hundred on a head and gaskets, I have to push that back for a bit.
Well I acquired a drop in replacement for my 7.3. I'm told it was running, has 255000 miles on it, and it was pulled because the truck rusted around it and he used the axles for another project. It's been sitting inside since pulled.
next step is to pull my engine and get this one ready to go in. I ordered a bunch of parts to replace common leaks while it's out so once that box gets here I'll start rolling on it. My biggest dilemma is whether or not to do cups since I have them and the motor is out. I've heard that these rarely need cups though, so not sure it's worth the time. I am going to replace the pedestal o rings because there appears to be oil seepage there. Oil pan is getting re sealed while I have it out, and fuel bowl rebuild with new hoses. Plus the new glow plugs I ordered. I think I'll save the new pushrods for the new build
Any input on whether or not to do cups? Any other big ticket items before i drop it in? my other is going to get a full rebuild, so I'm not gonna go too crazy with this one.
I'd leave cups alone if it were me and fix all the common leaks....maybe, MAYBE do uppies since it is out just because it is so much easier and they always leak. Great find man!!! Anxious to see how this goes.

I think I'm gonna leave the uppies alon . I looked at them really good and there is no soot at any joint. I think they're good for now. At least I hope!
I did get new plenum boots and clamps, fuel hoses and clamps, fuel line seals oil galley plug o rings, drain orings and pretty much every o ring for the top half of the engine.
New injector o-rings would be smart. Reseal the pan, they always leak and use the rest of the tube to reseal the plenums. Slap on a Melling LPOP too. Do new ZD11s and that Stancor GP relay. Do uppipes, Riffraff ones are great. Do a delete pedestal. Turbo rebuild is a cheap DIY, $65 I think only. New vacuum pump. New idlers. New water pump. Reseal oil cooler too.
All that stuff will swap right back to the other engine once it is prepped, so you will not lose money on it all.
Also, run a compression test on the one you just bought before doing anything. It still has the early CCV boot which are notorious for splitting and the turbocharger could be chewed up, dusting the bottom end.
Sounds like you are on the right track. I'll echo the guys, leave the cups alone. If you can swing it, get the bellowed uppies from Clay at Riff Raff. If they weren't leaking in the truck it came out of, it could be after you install it, due to maybe being hit in removal or install.
Well its settled. I'll leave the cups alone. I'll save them for the build when I strip the heads and re do everything. I went to harbor freight and got their 2000 lb engine stand. Mine wasnt up to the task. Tomorrow I should be able to start working on things and see what happens. I did get all the stuff to fix the common leaks and I'm gonna degrease everything real good so I can find any future leaks easier.
