Hello, I haven’t posted in the introduction section yet but this is my first post. I’m new to ford and just purchased my first. I found a nice 73 f100 that was pretty clean on the outside and had lots of work done inside and out. My wife and I drove to eastern Washington to get it and attempted to drive it back to western Washington. Before leaving the guy noticed fuel dripping from the fuel pump and we swapped it out on the spot with a new one and hit the road.
The truck ran perfectly as we made our way through Yakima , WA but then started having issues just before Snoqualmi and just before going over Snoqualmi pass we stalled out and had to get it towed the rest of the way. It wanted to run, but was struggling to stay running. We put about 105 miles on it before it crapped out.
Once the truck got home I started tinkering with it and got it to run for about 20 minutes but that was it.
I tested the battery with a multi meter and it was good.
I tested the coil pack and it seems to be good.
I replaced the ignition module but no luck there.
I checked the distributor cap and as far as I can tell everything seemed ok. I cleaned off the contacts and made sure it was spinning when I turned it over.
I tried to do a spark test with a spark plug, but I didn't see any spark when turning it over.
Any other ideas of what I
should check or test?
motor is a 460 bored to 500 according to the previous owner. When i last had it running it was popping a little bit but definitely struggled to idle. If I let off the gas it slowly died and wouldn’t start up again.
Thank you. Resolved the issue. The connection to the coil was hand twisted together and wrapped in electrical tape by previous owner, but came undone. Spliced the connection properly and she’s running like a champ again.
Huh. That'll do it! Probably go over the other wiring. For some reason electrical wiring really brings out the "previous owner" WTFery, I haven't found any extension cord or light switches yet but I've heard tell.
Welcome to FTE.
You'll find that the worst thing that can happen to one of our trucks is a previous owner.
Enjoy your truck and have fun with it. Just be prepared for many fun, enjoyable, frustrating, confusing moments.
What's wrong with using a light switch?
Temporary wiper switch while awaiting delivery of new one ...
Actually, there's nothing wrong with it as a temporary fix. The "wrong" comes in when you sell the truck three years later and the "temporary" switch is still there..
Kinda like the house in the neighborhood that not only still has their Christmas lights up in July, they still turn them on every night.
