Block Heaters..

You guys mentioned an engine block
heater for my cold blooded 390. But
I used the search feature and found
two different types. And which one
is the best {read: most effective}.
Any help would be appreciated.

Oh and would calling my for dealer
be a good route for getting one?

block heaters

Tim, I like the kind that look like a small tank, you splice them into the water lines for the heater. I think diesels usually have the kind that goes into where a casting plug was, but that might be a harder install. If you use the tank style, get some nice silicone heater hose to plumb it with. The extra heat is kinda hard on the hose, and the silicone hose holds up better. Try at an auto parts store, I got mine from NAPA. DF

KATS brand is the inline type heater you want. It plumbs into the heatercore line and the bottom of the block. It has a pump and small heating element. Plug it in at night and it keeps the temps the same. INSTANT heat in the morning.

Had one on my 1970, it was sweet.

WARNING: Dont stick you finger in the water when it's plugged in....it bites! The heating element is NOT isolated. I thought I would check to see if it was warm.....DOH! I got shocked. Just a word of warning.

Lower Radiator Hose Heater: KATS®; 600 Watt; 1-.50" Hose

Tim

!!!

So in theory when I get out to my
truck and it's REALLY cold, it'll turn
over very easily?

The tank heater style is the best IMO but I had to remove mine when I installed hedders..Couldn't run a hose the lower part of the block, to close to the hedders..Tried the lower rad. hose one, didn't really work all that great..Have heard the oil pan heaters work real good, warms the oil up so it is thinner..A batt. heater may help but I have never tried one..

FF428, that is my problem so far. I was looking at putting another one on my 67, but with headers it looks pretty tight down there. If I remember right, they give you a short nipple and an elbow with a fitting for 3/4" heater hose. Screw it into the bottom fitting in block. My 70 had manifolds on it(302 ci) and had lots of room.

I have not priced one out yet. I might still have the old one from my 70 but have not looked to hard for it. Being as old, it might not last long anyway. Figured I might as well buy a new one.

The lower radiator hose version might not work well only because IF it does not keep the water hotter than thermostat, it might not circulate enough to keep motor warm.

With the model I had, it took water from bottom of block, heated it, and then sent it thru heater and thru motor. It would keep the temp at maybe 130 or so. Starting the truck, you had almost instant heat. Not like it was when it was 20 degrees outside.

The model number is 12100 or 12150. There is a 1000 watt or 1500 watt version. I found it on the partsamerica website.

Yup, just like the tank heater I had except I had a straight fitting off the block..Heard you can tap into the lower rad. hose with a tee then bush down to fit your heater hose instead of coming off the block..Suppose to work the same but I have yet to try it..She starts up everytime at -20 or -30 but it would be nice make it a little easier on her..
