in a 73 390 fe what lifter is used. I am thinking hydrolics but i could be wrong. also what is the big difference in the two and is one better to run over the other?

The 73 blocks was most definitely a hydraulic block. You can run solids but they require a modification to the block and need adjusted regularly. Solid lifters allow for more aggresive ramp rates and generate a little more power all the way across the band.

Speaking of that, exactly what modifications have to be made to run a solid cam instead of hydraulic? And does a roller cam require block mods as well?
I don't believe the hydraulic rollers do. The solid rollers might. you have to plug one of the oil galleries. The process is outlined at www.gessford.com if you can read it. When I get back from Korea I am going to acquire a 390 block and take good pictures of this process and post them on my website. It will leave no doubts as to how this is done.
Roller cams require that the lifters be indexed to the cam (can't be allowed to spin in the hole). Roller cams are also made of steel and require a steel distributor gear. Don't have any experience with the FE's, but just put together a roller 351W. The roller lifters I've seen it the catalog appear to be linked in sets of two to prevent rotation. This should not require a block modification but there may be clearance issues. Also the pushrods will be shorter because the roller adds to the height of the lifter. My '58 332 had factory hydraulic lifters. The switch to solid required no block mods but had to add adjustable rockers.
