Okay I'm going to post again since my last one got 0 responses. 2000 X v10 4x4 240,000 miles. My transmission seems to have a hard/long shift into high gear at 50-60 mph. it seems to take longer to shift into gear and is rough/gritty. is this worn clutch packs? should i have it rebuilt in this early stage of wear to prevent further worse damage? right now the truck will drive and shift in all other gears perfectly. but high gear is super rough. I cant see why just one gear clutch packs go out, wouldn't it be all of them? my father in law owns a 1999 7.3 f250 with about 100,000 more miles on a much more beaten and had more heavy tow loads than mine ever did and his transmission shifts like glass. previous owner put an aftermarket trans cooler on mine btw.
At this point, not knowing the history, I would have it rebuilt. If they messed with the cooler, its sounds to me like its been overheated more than once. You may get away with a fluid flush (theres mixed feelings on this with so many miles) but for piece of mind, a rebuild is worth it. Also, and this is just my opinion, you shouldnt have to pay 5-6 thousand, even with a new convertor. I paid about $2500 for all the latest updates and a billet convertor. This from a shop I trust, is trusted in the community and they happen to be drag racers as well.

Does your '00 have the trans cooling circuit inside the radiator besides the oil to air cooler the PO installed? Is the aftermarket trans cooler installed in place of the factory cooler or in addition to it? Is the newer cooler a plate type cooler like the factory units or the less efficient tube and fin style? Do you have a means to monitor the actual trans temperature (not the dash gauge).

yes it does. so a total of 3 coolers. one in rad, stock cooler AND an aftermarket cooler on the lines off the stock stand alone cooler. I have a Gage cluster with a trans temp probe and I'm usually at 140 degrees and its been 85-90 degrees outside. The aftermarket cooler is a tube fin type.
