i have the same problem with 1st to 2nd only when i shift fast. i dont have a grinding, but more of a click into place. im assuming that the syncro cant work fast enough to mesh perfectly. They are large transmissions with big tollerances, i have driven several hevy duty trucks, and grinding is common when the gears are not matched with rpm correctly. i would think its somewhat normal, how many miles do you have?

It has 125,000 miles on it, I have that "click" when I shift into fifth, it seems like that 'clicking' into gear is a Ford thing. I was wondering if my problem wasn't something to do with the clutch not engaging fully...
