It is an extra payload option. Inbetween a F150 6500GVW and an F250 8800GVW.
It is a F150 with a 7700 Gross Vehicle Weight.
The 2003 brochure says that they also come with a beefed up tranny.

This model is very much like the '97-'99 F250 LD. I just bought a '98 4x4 F250 LD. I don't know much about it yet though. I do have a '99 brochure though and everything mentioned above is similar to my F250LD. My truck is rated at 7200 lbs though. It's 4x4 tow package but no snowplow package (although one might have been welded on once before). Truck was manuf. in Canada went to Michigan, MO, and now in TX.

I understand the snow plow didn't come with the truck just as a trailer didn't. I don't have the snow plow package because they have 4150 front GAWR while mine is only 3600 lbs. Something was welded on to the front at one time and the truck was in Michigan until 35K miles. The F250LD had 2 payload packages #1 and #2. #1 is rated at 7200 lbs and #2 is rated at 7700 lbs. I'm just mentioning the F250LD as a way of evolution for the F150 7700. No F150 had a rating higher than 6600 in 1999. And the F250LD was discontinued or at least the badging was changed to F150 7700. There are differences in any models and years. But few trucks have 7 lug wheels. I assure you that these are the same trucks. The trans was upgraded and the engine has more power after '98. But a '97-'99 F250LD would be equal that that years F150 7700 if there had been one. Or the other way around the newer F150 7700 is todays F250LD. Either way I like the truck. It is strong than a half but not as heavy as a SuperDuty. My bro has a "5/8" Silverado 4x4 w/ 5.7L. While it was a decent work truck it isn't as strong as my truck. I still need the HD/SuperDuty just not all the time.
Evolution is a good word for it. Line consolidation is another way to look at it.
While the basic major components are the same, frame, cooling, axle (whatever) , the 7700 can only come heavy loaded . Where as you could get a pretty light F250, with a 4.6 etc. In all reality, I think they did it to make things a little easier. The general public seemed confused about the F250 especially once the new SDs came out in 99. Hence the change for the 2000 MY.
Sorry Tim! When you said it may have been welded on there it sounded like you thought it may have come on the truck the same way a trailer hitch comes attached to the truck (as a Tow Package).

Could be worth some bucks if you still have it. They didn't make very many of these 7700's and they discontinued them as of the 2003 model year (upgraded to a 8200 lb GVWR iirc). Probably less than 200,000 trucks in four years. Sounds like a lot, but when you sell 850-900,000 trucks a year in four years, that's around 20%. Not as rare as some of those one off sports cars, but rare enough for me.
If i have to replace an emblem, I can only imagine how much money I'd have to spend to get it.
