2003 4.6 Expedition
Got a P0401 code.
truck has rough idle, low power and very sluggish off line, it feels like starting in 2nd gear. Once up to speed, it seems to have good power and runs fine. To me, this sounds like egr valve could be stuck open. I picked up new egr valve today. Never put one in, so I’d appreciate any instruction on how to do so.
also, is there anything else I should look at that could set this code?

There's a bunch of Youtube videos on the issue. The DPFE sensor is a common failure item that'll throw that code. But many times its the passage there in the aluminum elbow that the EGR valve mounts to that get clogged up with carbon and that elbow has to come off to thoroughly clean out the passages ( the exhaust gas flow passages on the throttle body elbow...). If you do take the EGR valve off, run a stiff wire up into the gas passage and see if you feel any blockage. Or if you have a borescope you can shove it into the passages to inspect them.

If you have an air compressor blow the hose out going to the throttle body, take the EGR valve out and use carb cleaner and blow the EGR valve out and everything else you can blow air through. Worked for me and I didn't spend a nickel.
