EGR vavle

I have an 02 4.6 f150 and i have a check engine light on and the code is saying to replace the EGR valve. Any ideas where it is and about how much it costs?

I would dig a little deeper. What was the exact code. Usually it's either the DPFE sensor or the EGR port is clogged in the intake manifold.

The ports can be cleaned if they are plugged. Rifle brushes are great for that.

The code was P0402, it was done at autozone and the guy told me it was the EGR valve and the EGR flow was excessive.

That could still be the dpfe sensor. I'm pretty sure thats the code mine was throwing. Replaced the dpfe and cleared it and it hasn't come back. One thing to check is the lines on the dpfe sensor if they have a white residue its bad.

Located next to the EGR, front & to the left as U look @ the EGR. I found it in the Haynes book under Chapter 6 page 6-15. Emissiona & Engine Control Systems. I have the same code & I'm gonna check the hoses for white stuff. AZ cleared the code but it came back w/in a day or two so this might be the problem w/mine.

Dan, U mentioned the ports can be cleaned w/a rifle brush. R U talk'in bout the DPFE sensor or when U take it off clean the ports. I've never removed one so that's why I'm asking.

Thanks,

My 2002 4.6 Mountaineer is throwing the same code. I'll check that sensor.

I can't locate a sensor in front or to the left of the EGR.

What is the function of the DPFE sensor?

Name-Diffrential Feedback Pressure Sensor=DPFE.

The pressure sensor monitors upstream (before) & downstream (after) exhaust back pressure. The back pressure coefficient is relayed to the PCM & correct amount of EGR (duty cycle) is applied to the EGR vacuum regulator control (EVR). The calculations in difference between the two pressures, the PCM determines exactly the EGR flow rate @ driving conditions.

From the book. I ain't that smart.

I found it in the back-center of the motor. I can get one for about $33.00 at a local auto parts store.

I'll get one tomorrow and replace the old one. Then I'll clear the code, and wait to see if it returns.

It is a 4.6 in a 2002 Mountaineer. The sensor is in the back of the motor, right in the center behind the throttle body. There are two sections of metal tube that are connected to it with short lengths of rubber hose. Then there is an electrical connector plugged into one side. I saw a picture on-line at Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone.

I went to Advance Auto Parts and they didn't have one. That was the cheapest price. I'll try Auto Zone or NAPA tomorrow.

I don't think that it is an emergency. The EGR valve is working, it's just the stupid sensor, that's screwed up.

I don't need an smog test for a year and 1/2.

And the largest price!

I wouldn't bother to replace it until I need to get it smogged, but I can't tell if anything else is wrong with the 'Service Engine Soon' light always on.
