Two or three times over the life of my truck, always in the morning during my highway commute to work, I’ve gotten a random vibrating sound from the front end. It sounds like what you’d expect those shutters in the front grill to sound if they’re trying to close and vibrating in the wind. Like a hard plastic fluttering in the wind. The sound travels right to left and happens twice, the second time a few seconds later.
Never had a CEL or any faults according to my reader. I’ve just ignored it as it’s never been repeatable or even a normal occurrence. However, it’s happened now twice the past week on the highway and also twice at lower speeds around town. If it becomes a fairly regular occurrence, I’m going to try and disconnect the shutters to see if that stops it. At least the top one.
Any other ideas or suggestions? Taking it to the dealership is not an option. I’m out of warranty, but more importantly this is one of those things that they’ll just say “cannot replicate”. Plus, I just tore my local dealership a new one in their Ford survey and I’m prob not wanted down there anytime soon.
I know the lowers close at start-up and I haven’t heard any sounds yet. But good idea....I’ll drag my lazy azz out in the morning and listen at start-up.
Watched the shutters cycle at startup twice today. Once when the engine was cold and a second time when it was warm. Both appear to function w/o any issues and cycled smoothly. I’m at a loss here. Wish I had a GoPro. I’d strap it to the grill and see if I can catch it in action.

If you have an old cell phone with a camera, it will do the same thing.
I believe the shutters will set a silent DTC code if they are malfunctioning. You should be able to read it with an MS-CAN capable OBD adapter and Forscan.

That’s my next step. The flutter sound hit twice this morning, so it’s getting worse. My engine temps seemed to swing up immediately after the sound, but to be fair I don’t know if the two are related.
